Philippines Weightlifting Icon Hidilyn Diaz-Naranjo to Lead National Squad at Southeast Asian Games 2025 in Thailand
The Philippines is set to be strongly represented at the 33rd Southeast Asian (SEA) Games, which will take place from 9 to 20 December 2025 in Thailand, with Olympic weightlifting champion Hidilyn Diaz-Naranjo leading the charge.
Diaz-Naranjo, who captured the nation’s first-ever Olympic gold medal at the Tokyo 2020 Games, is aiming to secure her third SEA Games gold in what promises to be another standout performance. Throughout her illustrious career, the 34-year-old weightlifter has amassed five medals at the regional multisport event, cementing her status as one of the Philippines’ most decorated athletes.
“With me, I’ll just do my best to represent the country,” Diaz-Naranjo told the Inquirer. “To all the athletes, I wish them luck. Remember to do your best for the country.” Her words reflect both her dedication and leadership as she inspires the next generation of Filipino athletes.
The Philippine contingent for the 2025 SEA Games is composed of 1,499 athletes who will compete across 50 medal sports. Competitions will be held in venues across Bangkok and the Chonburi province, with the country aiming to continue its strong performances in previous editions of the Games.
Joining Diaz-Naranjo in the national squad is tennis prodigy Alexandra Eala, who has enjoyed a breakthrough season, breaking into the top 50 of the WTA rankings. The 20-year-old will be seeking her first SEA Games gold after winning three bronze medals at the 2021 edition in Vietnam. Eala will also serve as one of the team’s flagbearers at the Opening Ceremony on 9 December, alongside volleyball star Bryan Baguna.
The Philippine team also features several other world-class athletes, including reigning 59kg weightlifting champion Elreen Ann Ando, two-time Olympic swimming medallist Kayla Sanchez, and double Olympic pole vaulter EJ Obiena. With such a strong lineup, the Philippines hopes to challenge for top honors across multiple disciplines.
