Philippine Ombudsman Reveals Battle with Blood Cancer After Heart Surgery

MANILA, Philippines — The nation’s newly appointed Ombudsman, Jesus Crispin “Boying” Remulla, has shared a deeply personal health struggle, revealing that he was diagnosed with a form of blood cancer shortly after undergoing a life-saving quintuple bypass surgery in 2023. The revelation, made during an interview with journalist Luchi Cruz-Valdez on October 24, 2025, sheds light on the serious health complications that followed his initial heart operation.

Remulla, who was appointed as Ombudsman on October 7, 2025, disclosed the unexpected turn his recovery took. “I went through a quintuple bypass, open-heart surgery,” he recounted. “Just as I was starting to get better, I received a cancer diagnosis.” The discovery of leukemia was made by doctors while he was recuperating from the complex heart procedure, which had been necessitated by the finding of multiple blockages in his heart.

The Road to Recovery: Chemotherapy and a Son’s Sacrifice

The former Justice Secretary and long-time Cavite Representative faced this unexpected diagnosis with resilience, ultimately undergoing intensive treatment that included chemotherapy and a crucial bone marrow transplant.

In an emotional detail that underscores the depth of his family bond, Remulla revealed that his own son served as the bone marrow donor, a selfless act that redefined his biological make-up.

“So my blood now is no longer my own blood,” the Ombudsman explained. “This is the blood that came from my son.” This profound transformation marks not only his physical recovery but also symbolizes a profound, life-giving connection to his family.

Prior Health Scares and Public Service

Remulla’s health concerns had previously led to public knowledge when he took a wellness leave after his bypass surgery in June 2023. At that time, while details were scarce, he had acknowledged having “complications” in the months following the operation. His recent candid disclosure now fully explains the severity of those complications.

Despite these significant health challenges, Remulla accepted the pivotal role of Ombudsman, an office central to investigating and prosecuting corruption within the Philippine government. His determination to serve in a demanding public office, following such a rigorous and life-threatening medical ordeal, is a testament to his commitment, even as he relies on the “new blood” of his son. His journey serves as a powerful personal story of overcoming adversity while holding one of the most crucial anti-graft positions in the nation.

🇹🇱 Timor-Leste Completes ASEAN Family: A ‘Historic Moment’ After 14-Year Wait

A Young Democracy’s Triumph of Resilience and Regional Integration

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — In what has been widely celebrated as a “historic moment” for Southeast Asia, East Timor (Timor-Leste) officially joined the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), completing the 11-member regional bloc after a long-standing application process. The country’s accession is viewed as a triumph of persistence, democracy, and a powerful step toward securing its future through regional economic integration.

The admission of the young democracy follows a patient 14-year wait since its initial application in 2011. This significant event is also highlighted as one of the crowning achievements during the ASEAN chairmanship of Malaysia.

A Dream Realized: Resilience and Hope

Timor-Leste’s leaders expressed immense pride and hope during the accession ceremony. An emotional Xanana Gusmao, the country’s revered leader, hailed the moment as a new beginning that promises “immense opportunities” for trade and investment.

“For the people of Timor-Leste, this is not only a dream realised, but a powerful affirmation of our journey—one marked by resilience, determination and hope,” Gusmao stated, adding that their accession is “a testament to the spirit of our people, a young democracy, born from our struggle.” He emphasized that this milestone is not an end, but “the beginning of an inspiring new chapter.”

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim echoed this sentiment, stating that East Timor’s accession “completes the ASEAN family—reaffirming our shared destiny and deep sense of regional kinship.”

The Long Campaign for Membership

The push for regional inclusion has been championed for decades by East Timorese President Jose Ramos-Horta. The 1996 Nobel Peace Prize laureate first conceived of the idea of joining ASEAN as far back as the 1970s, viewing regional integration as essential to securing his nation’s long-term future.

Timor-Leste’s journey to sovereignty was arduous. Ruled by Portugal for three centuries, the nation faced a bloody annexation and occupation by neighboring Indonesia following Portugal’s abrupt withdrawal in 1975. The nation finally achieved full independence in 2002.

While the country was granted observer status in 2022, its full membership was delayed by various administrative and economic challenges inherent to its fledgling state.

Economic Hopes and Strategic Contributions

The nation of 1.4 million people is currently one of Asia’s poorest. With a small economy valued at approximately $2 billion—a tiny fraction of ASEAN’s collective $3.8 trillion GDP—Timor-Leste holds high hopes for the economic gains associated with full membership. Approximately 42 percent of the population lives below the national poverty line, and nearly two-thirds of its citizens are under the age of 30.

Its major source of government revenue, the oil and gas industry, is rapidly depleting its resources, making economic diversification critical. ASEAN membership immediately grants Timor-Leste access to the bloc’s free trade deals, investment opportunities, and a broader regional market.

Beyond economic benefits, President Ramos-Horta indicated that Timor-Leste could contribute its unique experience in conflict resolution, particularly for regional disputes over borders or the South China Sea. As he noted in a September interview, “If we can in the future contribute towards strengthening ASEAN mechanisms such as conflict mechanisms, that is key.”

Timor-Leste is the latest addition to the bloc, which began in 1967 as a five-member association and saw its previous expansion with Cambodia in 1999. Their entry reinforces ASEAN’s principles of shared destiny and regional solidarity.
