Consulate: Rest of Filipinos in HK complex fire safe, accounted for

MANILA – All Filipinos who were likely working at the high-rise apartment complex affected by the deadly fire in Tai Po, Hong Kong, have been reported safe and accounted for, according to the Philippine Consulate General in Hong Kong on Tuesday.

In its latest advisory, the Consulate General stated: “The Consulate General has confirmed that of all the Filipino nationals concerned, 92 are safe and accounted for, while one is injured and remains hospitalized.”

The advisory further noted that the last two overseas Filipino workers who were still being verified were actually already in the Philippines when the fire broke out, and therefore were not at risk.

Earlier reports confirmed that one Filipino domestic worker, Maryan Pascual Esteban, tragically lost her life in the inferno. Esteban, who leaves behind a 10-year-old son in Cainta, Rizal, was reportedly preparing to return to the Philippines for the Christmas holidays when the fire occurred.

Her untimely death has cast a shadow of grief over the Filipino community in Hong Kong, highlighting the vulnerability of overseas workers who often live and work in high-risk conditions far from home.

The blaze, described as the deadliest in Hong Kong in decades, claimed 146 lives and left dozens more still missing.

Firefighters and rescue teams have been working tirelessly to reach survivors and recover victims, but the intensity of the fire and the thick smoke have made rescue operations extremely challenging.Toàn cảnh thảm kịch cháy chung cư tại Hong Kong khiến ít nhất 128 người chết

The Philippine Consulate General emphasized its ongoing commitment to assisting the victims and their families, coordinating closely with local authorities to ensure the safety and well-being of all Filipino nationals living and working in Hong Kong.

It also urged members of the Filipino community to maintain communication and report any emergency situations, in order to provide timely assistance to those in need.
