Cartwheels and Catwalks: Miss Grand International Preliminaries Deliver High-Octane Entertainment

MANILA, Philippines — The preliminary competition for the Miss Grand International (MGI) 2025 pageant, held at the MGI Hall in Bangkok, Thailand, on Wednesday evening, October 15, certainly lived up to the organization’s reputation for high-octane, unconventional entertainment. With 76 candidates from around the globe competing in the swimsuit and evening gown segments, the show was defined by its memorable antics, exaggerated movements, and daring stage routines.

The MGI pageant has consciously positioned itself as a unique platform that encourages participants to conduct themselves differently than those in more traditional contests, where candidates are typically expected to be more demure. This philosophy has resulted in an enthusiastic embrace of outrageous, outlandish stage routines—featuring extra movements, dramatic spin turns, and over-the-top costumes—all aimed at maximizing viewer engagement.

Standout Moments: Cartwheels, Songs, and Signature Moves

The preliminary competition saw several candidates make a lasting impression by breaking the mold with their distinct presentations:

Miss Japan’s Acrobatic Ambition: Erika Ishibashi upped the ante on her already-known stage presence. She had previously showcased her acrobatic skills in the national swimsuit contest, but in the preliminary competition, she attempted a series of multiple cartwheels. While attempting a final flip, she momentarily slipped, but her recovery was noted as graceful and playful. She quickly posed on the floor before standing again, demonstrating poise under pressure.
Miss Thailand’s Trained Sophistication: Sarunrat Puagpipat opened her routine with a striking pose, sitting poised on the heel of one foot with the other leg crossed over. Her polished stage presence is likely due to her training under the reigning queen, CJ Opiaza, for her national contest.
Miss Ghana’s Enchanting Voice: Faith Porter utilized her talent beyond the standard walk. Wearing a gown designed by Ryan Uson, she delivered her country’s name as a song during her introduction, captivating the audience with her “angelic voice.”
Miss Philippines’ Signature Roll: Emma Tiglao embraced the MGI spirit with her memorable performance. She employed her signature hair-tussling move and glided down the runway with exaggerated hip movements and distinct shoulder rolls in both the swimsuit and gown segments, ensuring her presentation was uniquely dynamic.

Fashion Trends: Capes and Flowing Fabrics Dominate

The evening gown competition was defined by drama and movement, with many candidates opting for elaborate garments that emphasized volume and flow. The runway became a showcase of capes and long flowy skirts, mirroring the sophisticated yet dramatic fashion choices worn by the reigning Miss Grand International, CJ Opiaza, during her own preliminary and final competitions last year. This trend confirms the MGI stage as a place where maximalist fashion is not only accepted but encouraged.

The preliminary competition successfully fulfilled its role of generating buzz and excitement ahead of the final event. The grand finals, where CJ Opiaza is set to relinquish her Miss Grand International title to her successor, will take place on Saturday, October 18, at the same MGI Hall venue in Bangkok.

What are your predictions for who will succeed Opiaza and take home the MGI 2025 crown?
