A Difficult Beginning: Maki Shares a Challenging Moment Early in His Career
Despite the success that OPM singer-songwriter Maki enjoys today, his path to stardom was marked by difficult moments and personal challenges. Before becoming a well-known artist, Maki faced numerous auditions that tested his determination and resilience as he chased his dreams.
In a recent episode of Fast Talk with Boy Abunda aired on August 7, 2025, Maki opened up about some of the obstacles he encountered during his early days in the entertainment industry. His candid reflections reveal a side of showbiz that many do not often see—the moments that test not only talent but also emotional strength.
Maki recalled one particular audition that left a lasting impression on him. Beyond being simply challenging, this experience forced him to question whether the world of entertainment was truly meant for him.
The 25-year-old artist revealed that during this audition, which took place behind closed doors, he was subjected to uncomfortable questions that were inappropriate for someone his age at the time. This happened when he was just 15 years old—still a young and passionate dreamer stepping into the industry.
Reflecting on the experience, Maki shared, “This was the biggest challenge I faced when I considered pursuing this path. Not many people know about this, and I’m not even sure if my parents are aware.”
Back then, he was full of enthusiasm and hope. He gave his best during the audition—acting, singing, and dancing—in front of just one person, with the door locked behind them.
As he recounted the incident, Maki paused to take a deep breath before continuing. He explained that after the audition, he was asked questions that were clearly not meant for someone his age. It was the first time he had been faced with such inquiries, and naturally, he didn’t know how to respond appropriately in the context of the industry.
When Boy Abunda asked directly if he had experienced any inappropriate behavior during that audition, Maki responded carefully, saying he wasn’t sure how to label what happened. Boy further clarified, asking if the questions were of a personal or intimate nature, to which Maki quietly confirmed.
Maki admitted that he didn’t know how to answer those questions then, and he couldn’t even remember exactly what he said. He was told by the person conducting the audition that they needed to know those details in order to understand him better as an artist.
Being young and shy, Maki trusted these words and ended up revealing more than he had intended. He described feeling metaphorically “stripped down”—not physically, but emotionally exposed in a way that was deeply unsettling for him.
Feeling scared, Maki found a way to leave the room by telling a small lie—that he needed to use the restroom. He never returned to that audition. On the ride home, he cried quietly, overwhelmed by confusion and fear.
He reflected, “At that moment, I didn’t understand what had just happened to me. But I kept thinking about my dream. I wondered if I was ready for it, or if my dream was too big for who I was then.”
In closing, Maki made it clear that he was never physically harmed or touched inappropriately by the person involved, emphasizing firmly that he would never allow such a thing to happen.
Today, Maki is well-known for hit songs like “Dilaw,” “Saan?,” “Kailan?,” “Bughaw,” and “Kahel na Langit,” and he continues to inspire many with both his music and his resilience.
Maki’s story sheds light on the less glamorous side of the entertainment industry, reminding us of the courage required to pursue one’s dreams in the face of challenges. It also highlights the importance of protecting young talents and creating safe spaces for them to grow and flourish.
As fans and supporters, recognizing these experiences helps us appreciate not only the success but also the strength behind the artists we admire.
