Vice Ganda Goes Viral for Criticizing Complicated ID System in the Philippines: “No ID, No ID!”

MANILA, Philippines — Comedian and television host Vice Ganda has once again sparked a nationwide conversation, this time by calling out what he described as the “confusing and frustrating” system of obtaining government-issued IDs in the Philippines.
In a recent video clip that quickly went viral on social media, Vice Ganda aired his frustration over the bureaucracy that many Filipinos face when applying for their first official identification documents.
“Let’s admit it. In the Philippines, when you apply for an ID, they ask you to present an ID. So how are you supposed to get an ID in the first place?” he exclaimed during his now-viral monologue.
“You’re trying to get an ID because you don’t have one — and then they ask for an ID so you can get one?! How many IDs do you want from us?!”
The clip, which was shared widely across TikTok, YouTube, and Facebook, received hundreds of thousands of views within hours, with the phrase “No ID, no ID” becoming a trending topic on X (formerly Twitter) and other platforms.
Relatable Rant Hits a Nerve
Vice Ganda’s statement struck a chord with many Filipinos — particularly first-time job seekers, students, and members of marginalized communities — who often encounter similar problems when attempting to access basic government services.
For many, the process of securing a government-issued ID is riddled with red tape. Common requirements include presenting another valid ID — something not all applicants have — along with proof of billing, barangay clearance, police clearance, and other documents that can be time-consuming and costly to obtain.
“It’s a real problem,” said 23-year-old job hunter Ella Mae Villanueva in an online interview. “I graduated last year, and I’ve been trying to apply for jobs, but almost every company asks for at least one government ID. I tried to get a postal ID, but they asked me for two other IDs. It’s a loop I can’t escape.”
Mixed Reactions from the Public

Following Vice’s comments, netizens flooded social media with their own experiences and frustrations. Many expressed support and agreement, saying the ID application system is outdated and needs urgent reform.
“Vice Ganda is right. The whole process is ironic. The government needs to simplify it, especially for those getting their first ID,” one user posted.
Others, however, defended the current procedures, arguing that requiring IDs and supporting documents is part of standard security measures to prevent fraud and identity theft.
“This is not just about inconvenience — it’s about national security,” another netizen responded. “If anyone could just get an ID without presenting any proof of identity, imagine how easily it could be abused.”
Despite the differing views, there was a general consensus online that more should be done to streamline the process, particularly in accommodating first-time applicants who don’t have any existing valid IDs.
Bureaucratic Loopholes and Systemic Delays
Vice Ganda’s rant brings attention to a longstanding issue in the Philippine bureaucracy: circular requirements that make access to services challenging, especially for the youth and low-income citizens.
The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) and other government agencies have introduced the PhilSys National ID as a solution to unify and simplify identity verification, but the program has been plagued by delays, backlog issues, and incomplete rollouts since its implementation.
In fact, many Filipinos who registered for the national ID during its early phases are still waiting for their physical cards years later — further complicating matters for those needing valid identification.
Public Figures and Advocates React
Several public figures and civic groups have also chimed in on the discussion sparked by Vice Ganda.
Senator Risa Hontiveros, in a social media post, echoed Vice’s concerns and called for a congressional review of current ID issuance protocols.
“We need to cut the red tape. Access to legal identity is a right, not a privilege,” she said. “Vice Ganda’s rant may be humorous, but the issue is very real.”
Meanwhile, youth-led organizations have begun mobilizing online petitions and calls for reform in how government agencies issue IDs, especially to underserved communities.
Humor as a Tool for Advocacy
Vice Ganda, known for using comedy as commentary, has often addressed social issues in his shows and public appearances. His ability to turn frustrating realities into viral punchlines has made him an unexpected voice for advocacy — especially among the younger generation.
“This is why we love Vice,” one fan commented. “He says what we’re all thinking, but in a way that makes you laugh — and reflect at the same time.”
Despite the light tone of his statement, Vice’s words have reignited discussions on bureaucracy and public service efficiency — topics that resonate deeply with ordinary citizens navigating complex systems daily.
Moving Forward
As the debate continues, the question remains: Will government agencies respond to the renewed public pressure to improve ID application processes? With national and local elections approaching in the coming years, some political analysts believe this issue could become part of broader discussions on public service reform.
For now, Vice Ganda’s viral catchphrase — “No ID, no ID!” — remains both a punchline and a protest, highlighting the absurdity many Filipinos face when trying to obtain something as basic, yet essential, as legal identification.
