Connor Bedard wrapped up his first NHL season with the Calder Trophy and an impressive 61 points in 68 games, earning him a spot on the NHL Network’s Top 20 Centers list at number 13.
Mike Johnson, an NHL analyst, gave his thoughts on Bedard’s performance on the NHL Network.
Despite a tough season with injuries, Bedard managed to score nearly a point per game.
Johnson and Tony Luftman see Bedard’s 13th ranking as a sign of big expectations for his future.
However, Johnson noted that Bedard needs to improve his defensive game to justify his high ranking.
«All that being said is great, and that will get you 20th, but doesn’t get you 13th NHL. You got to be able to play defensively. You got to play protecting a lead. You got to play against other teams, best players, and Connor Bedard wasn’t able to do that with great success.”Johnson believes Bedard has the potential for growth and will continue to improve in these areas with the Blackhawks.
Bedard’s rookie season saw him leading all NHL rookies in goals and points, and he was ahead by 14 points over the next player (Brock Faber, defensemen of the Minnesota Wild).
