A trio of Calgary Flames players are currently up for grabs thanks to the team currently in the midst of a rebuild and the Maple Leafs could snatch up some key pieces.
Calgary decided to have a fire sale after missing the playoffs with the likes of Noah Hanifin, Chris Tanev (now a Maple Leaf), Elias Lindholm and Jacob Markstrom all leaving the team at various points. Now according to an Instagram posting from “TheMugNHL” it looks like the Flames are looking to sell some more veterans in order to gain some draft capital.
Two names that stick out on the post are former Maple Leaf Nazem Kadri and Mackenzie Weegar, two key players who could definitely add some much needed oomph to the Maple Leafs lineup.
Kadri coming back home to the team that drafted him 7th overall in 2009 would alleviate a lot of the issues currently plaguing the Maple Leafs. It would add a veteran presence and winner, another center to help with the scant amount of players down the middle, and someone who can consistently put the puck in the net.
After a few first down seasons in Colorado, Kadri exploded in his final season with the Avalanche, and has scored 81 goals and 137 assists in his last 235 NHL games. He could add some goal scoring help in the Top 9 which Toronto needs badly.
Weegar would give the Maple Leafs a definitive Top 4 with Morgan Rielly, Chris Tanev, Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Weegar. Not to mention Jake McCabe and Timothy Liljegren chomping at the bits to get playing time.
He scored 20 goals and 32 assists last season for the Flames which was an offensive explosion for a player who never scored more than 8 goals previously. He’s also a right-handed shot and a big body on the blueline which would give Toronto the edge in a deep playoff push.
If Toronto wants to pull the trigger on the trade they will need to trade someone the likes of Nikita Grebyonkin or Artur Akhtyamov plus Conor Timmins/David Kampf along with a draft pick or two; but if Calgary is desperate enough to sell, the Maple Leafs could end up securing one or possibly both men at a discount and perhaps persuade Calgary to retain some of the salary in order to make it work.
One way or another, things are heating up the closer we get to the opening of the preseason and the Flames are a definitive reason why.
