Tony DeAngelo is skating at ice rinks in Russia, playing for the Saint Petersburgh Hockey Club. However, not long ago, he was battling it out in the NHL, with his most memorable time coming during his four seasons with the New York Rangers.
DeAngelo suited up for the Rangers in 167 games, earning 92 points, including 19 goals. The defenseman had a decent 2019-20 season, playing 68 games for the team.
In the 2020-21 season, Tony DeAngelo was given a warning for his unsportsmanlike conduct on Opening Night. In February of that season, he was put on waivers by the club for an altercation with goaltender Alexandar Georgiev after an overtime loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins.
On X, in response to DeAngelo commenting on Rangers’ Vincent Trochek’s play in Friday’s game against the Penguins, a user asked why the 29-year-old was still invested in the team after being treated poorly by the organization. DeAngelo shared how he felt about the situation on Saturday:
“I love to follow. I don’t root or not root for them, to be honest. They mishandled the way I was let go but I have no hard feelings for them wanting to let me go. Just wish they would have traded me instead of waiving and causing chaos for no reason.”
Tony DeAngelo’s departure from Rangers wasn’t a ‘total shock’ to him
In August, during an appearance on Bleacher Report’s “Morning Cuppa Hockey,” DeAngelo had the same sentiments about getting traded away from New York:
“I thought I was going to get traded to be honest with you. I ended up getting put on release waivers. Elliotte Friedman broke the news to me. To be honest with you, it wasn’t a total shock that I was going to be out of there at that point because the season started off so rocky and a lot of it being my fault. Probably just the icing on the cake.”
Tony DeAngelo couldn’t find his footing after leaving New York, joining the Carolina Hurricanes and the Philadelphia Flyers for one-year spells before eventually exiting the league.
