In baseball, the shortstop is regarded as a premium position from a defensive perspective. The role has changed over the different eras, with offensive output becoming an increasingly important factor in recent decades. Nevertheless, defensive capability remains a primary requisite for arguably the most important fielding position on a baseball diamond besides the catcher.

Here’s a closer look at five shortstops that are leading the race for the Gold Glove, the award given to the best defensive players for every position in their respective leagues.

The Colorado Rockies fans have not had much to cheer about this season, with the club currently having the second-worst record in the MLB. However, Ezequiel Tovar has been one of the few bright lights in their campaign, and the shortstop is batting .273/.296/.461 with 19 home runs and 51 RBIs this season.

Tovar also has an outstanding .988 fielding percentage in 119 games with eight outs above average and seven defensive runs saved.

Anthony Volpe cemented his spot as an integral part of the New York Yankees lineup after picking up a Gold Glove in his rookie season. He seems to have improved with the bat as well, despite going through a tough period earlier in the campaign.

Moreover, Volpe has produced 13 outs above average and four defensive runs saved, along with a .973 fielding percentage in 121 appearances.

The 2024 campaign will certainly not rank among the best for Dansby Swanson. The two-time All-Star is batting .229/.298/.353 this year, to set a new personal low for his nine-year career. Despite struggling at the plate, he has done a remarkable job for the Chicago Cubs from a defensive standpoint.

Swanson has a .989 fielding percentage along with 15 outs above average and four defensive runs saved, which could well hand him a third straight Gold Glove.

#1. Bobby Witt Jr. – Kansas City Royals
