The Boston Red Sox were surprise contenders for Juan Soto and, at one point, seemed the favorites to land him this offseason. However, their 15-year $700 million offer didn’t come close to the top two suitors — the New York clubs.
The Red Sox were also linked to players like Corbin Burnes, Max Fried and Alex Bregman. However, as per Sean McAdam of Fenway Rundown, the team was never in contention for the top two pitchers.
Red Sox insider Jarred Carrabis echoed these words and said that the “backlash” stemming from such an offseason could be massive in the context of Boston baseball.
“If this is true — after all the hype this winter, the backlash will be monumental and perhaps unforgivable,” Carrabis tweeted on Tuesday. “Last straw kinda stuff with a fraction of the fan base and I don’t think I could blame them.”
Red Sox miss out on Max Fried as he inks deal with New York Yankees
The Red Sox got some respite when Soto chose to play in Queens instead of the Bronx. Having to see him for 15 years with the Yankees would have been a hard pill to swallow. However, they also lost Max Fried to the Yanks.
Per ESPN’s Jeff Passan, New York Yankees have signed Fried to an eight-year $218 million deal that will keep him with the club until his age 39 season. His addition will make for a strong 1-2 punch for the Bombers at the start of the rotation alongside Gerrit Cole.
This leaves Boston to target only Corbin Burnes. He will be the hardest to acquire because he was projected to earn around $250 million.
