The head coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs was not happy with one of his forwards during a tough loss to the New York Rangers.
The Toronto Maple Leafs suffered a loss at the hands of the New York Rangers on Saturday night, losing by a score of 4-1, and following the conclusion of the game Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube expressed his displeasure with one player in particular.
Now to be clear Berube wasn’t blaming the loss on a single player, and in fact he made it clear that he felt the team’s offensive effort as a whole could use improvement, criticizing his forward group in a number of areas.
“Couldn’t find the back of the net,” said Berube following the loss. “We had opportunities. I think we can do a better job of taking his eyes away a little bit more. We had a lot of looks. We got to execute better in the third on the power play and 6-on-5.”
That being said, when Berube was asked why forward Pontus Holmberg had seen so little ice time over the course of the entire game he did not shy away from calling out Holmberg’s lackluster performance as of late.
“He’s got to battle a little bit harder for pucks and hang onto the pucks a little bit more like he was in training camp,” said Berube. “He looks just a little step behind right now maybe”
There’s no disputing the fact that Holmberg did not have a great night. He would only see 11 minutes and 18 seconds of ice time thanks to landing in the coach’s doghouse and arguably hurt his team by taking a penalty and finishing the game with a plus minus rating of -1 on the night.
Whether or not Berube’s call out of Holmberg will have the desired effect in his performance will only be known when the Leafs next play on Monday when they welcome the Tampa Bay Lightning to Toronto.
