The Maple Leafs have some high profile free agents in need of new deals, and one NHL Insider has some good news to report on Knies, McCabe.
During training camp, McCaberevealed that he and the Leafs had already been negotiating, while Knies confirmed he would like to stay in Toronto long-term and continue his tenure with the Maple Leafs for the forseeable future.
Last week, Nick Kypreos reported on McCabe’s upcoming extension during ‘The Real Kyper & Bourne Show’. According to Kypreos, McCabe is likely going to get a 6-year deal worth approximately $30M, or $5M per season, which isn’t all that terrible for a top-four blueliner.
On Tuesday, ahead of the Utah Hockey Club’s inaugural game in Salt Lake City, The Fourth Period’s Dave Pagnotta revealed that a McCabe extension could be happening sooner than later. He also confirmed that Matthew Knies is also still engaged with the Leafs in extension talks. The Tavares talks are ongoing as well.
“From the Toronto Maple Leafs side of things, they have held contract negotiations with John Tavares, Matthew Knies and Jake McCabe’s camp. For the most part, they are relatively loose except for McCabe. It certainly sounds like they are having decent conversations and those negotiations could intensify in the coming days. I don’t think we will see a deal before Wednesday’s game…but it sounds like over the next several days we may see an extension in place between the Leafs and McCabe.”
Leafs Nation is split on the future outlook of the blueline with how much money and term GM Brad Treliving has handed out to mid-30-year-olds, but the Leafs’ window to win is now, with the lifespan of Auston Matthews’ four-year extension, which kicks in this season. Solidifying another member of the top-four will continue to give the Leafs the best blueline they and Morgan Rielly have seen in years — and one that can play playoff hockey.
