Texas rapper That Mexican OT recently opened up about one of his biggest inspirations in hip hop: Eminem.
Known for blending southern hip-hop with Latin rap, OT gave props to Em during an appearance on In Their Own Words, praising his lyrical genius. He explained how Eminem’s intricate wordplay has shaped his own approach to rhyming and lyricism by breaking down Marshall’s line:
Eminem said one of my favourite bars. He said something along the lines of “It’s going to take 40 men to stomp me for me to feel a defeat”. If you have 40 men, how many feet do you have? Eighty feet, a defeat.
The line that stood out for OT comes from Eminem’s 2018 “Kick Off”:
’Cause it’ll take LAPD and me layin’ in the street
For you to see Shady beat
And I’ll bet ya they’d need cleats
’Cause I’d have to be stomped by forty men to suffer a defeat
OT’s deep appreciation for a less mainstream track like “Kick Off” shows some serious knowledge. This freestyle is not a radio hit or a classic song like “Lose Yourself” or “My Name Is” that everybody knows. Who can deny Marshall’s influence on the new generation of hip hop when young rappers study the greats to hone their own craft?
