Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews appeared quite different in a recent photo shoot, showcasing a new thinner physique.
This offseason has brought significant changes to the Maple Leafs organization, including the hiring of new head coach Craig Berube, the signings of key free agents, and the appointment of a new captain, as John Tavares has passed the ‘C’ to Auston Matthews.
After nearly scoring 70 goals last season, there is little Matthews needs to alter in his play. However, he appears to have dropped some weight this summer, bringing a thinner physique to training camp.
Matthews looks noticeably thinner in these photos. Typically, he is a heavier player with a substantial frame, as is obvious not only by his listed weight of 215 pounds but also by his ability to protect the puck effectively due to his strength.
This change in his physique could be for various reasons, such as a desire to become more agile and a little bit quicker. Alternatively, and I hope this isn’t the case, it could indicate he is recovering from an illness or injury, given the significant shift from his usual appearance.
Regardless of the reason, the superstar from Arizona remains a crucial element for the Maple Leafs’ success this year. As he continues to build on his impressive goal-scoring pace, Matthews is on track to become one of the greatest, if not THE greatest, goal-scorers of all time.
