Former Leafs GM Kyle Dubas’ grandmother not a fan of the Penguins’ start to the season and believes it’s time to move on from one of his early signings in Pittsburgh.
Kyle Dubas made some great moves as GM of the Leafs, as well as some bad and some ugly ones, including handcuffing the team so they could not trade their 2026 first-round pick.
Since joining the Penguins, Dubas has also poached a number of front-office staff members from the Leafs as he looks to restock the Penguins’ prospect pool while keeping them competitive enough to get into the playoffs.
One of Dubas’ biggest fans is his grandmother, Marietta Dubas, whom Leafs fans would affectionately refer to as “Gramma Dubie” during his time in Toronto. She would often offer up her opinions on social media, and that hasn’t changed now that her grandson is in Pittsburgh.
Last off-season, Dubas chose to re-sign goaltender Tristan Jarry to a 5-year extension that carries a $5.38M cap hit. The signing was questioned at the time by many across the league, but has now come under fire from Grandma Dubas as well. Jarry was assigned to the AHL on a conditioning stint and when the news was announced by the Penguins on ‘X’, Gramma Dubie replied with some not-so-nice words for her grandson and the Penguins.
“C’mon Pens, you got to get it together, time to realize time is moving on and so should the Penguins!!”
It is certainly surprising to see her make a direct comment on the organization’s ‘X’ account and criticize something that her grandson has done so publicly. One has to wonder whether perhaps her and Kyle had a conversation about Jarry’s play at some point and maybe her comments are a reflection of how her grandson feels about his goaltender. Either way, it doesn’t bode well for Jarry’s future in Pittsburgh.
