A massive trade proposal has the Philadelphia Phillies shaking up their core by dealing All-Star slugger Nick Castellanos to an NL East division rival
Nick Castellanos wrapped up the third season of a five-year, $100 million deal he signed in 2022. He has led the Phillies to three straight postseason appearances, including the 2022 World Series and two NLCS berths.
However, the Phillies’ 95-win 2024 season ended with a disappointing loss to the rival New York Mets in the NLDS. This was a major step backward for a team that was coming off a second straight NLCS appearance.
According to Matt Gelb of The Athletic, the Phillies have made the two-time All-Star “available in trade talks.” Gelb added that Philly would likely have to eat up some of the $40 million left on Castellanos’ deal to make a trade work.
One team that makes perfect sense for Nick Castellanos is the San Francisco Giants, who missed the postseason for the third straight year after a surprise 107-55 campaign in 2021.
Bleacher Report’s Zachary D. Rymer proposed a blockbuster trade idea that has the Phillies sending Nick Castellanos and shortstop prospect Starlyn Caba to the rebuilding Washington National
The Giants have been linked to many big-named superstars over the years, including Bryce Harper, Giancarlo Stanton, and even Juan Soto. The front office hasn’t succeeded, but they could look at B-tier guys like Castellanos to bolster their lineup.
San Francisco needs more power in their lineup to make noise in the crowded National League. Adding Castellanos alone wouldn’t be enough, but it would be a big step forward for Bob Melvin’s group.
What Giants Should Offer Phillies For Nick Castellanos
The Giants already have Mike Yastrzemski in right field and Matt Chapman at third base (Castellanos’ two main positions). He can play rotated field positions and even slot in as their designated hitter.
Assuming Philly wants to dump Castellanos’ contract and use that money elsewhere, the Giants could probably get Castellanos for a pair of mid-tier prospects. A fair trade offer would be Castellanos to San Fran, with Philadelphia eating $10 million of his contract, for prospects Wade Meckler (outfielder) and right-handed pitcher Carson Seymour.
