Kris Knoblauch discusses Corey Perry’s role and leadership for Oilers this season (Source: Imagn)
During a press conference on Monday, Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch talked about Corey Perry’s mindset after being scratched in the playoffs last season. Knoblauch pointed out Perry’s role on the second-unit power play and his leadership qualities.
He mentioned that Perry can disrupt opponents and bring valuable skills to the team. Although he is currently slotted for the fourth line, Perry can also play with more skilled players when needed.
When asked about Perry’s acceptance of possible lineup changes, Knoblauch praised his “team-first” attitude.
(3:24) “Corey’s been a very strong team-first guy. Last year, it was tough not having him in the lineup for some of the playoff games, but he handled it really well.
“He was always encouraging and helping the other guys with their games. Corey is the ultimate pro,” Knoblauch said.
The Oilers signed Perry to a one-year deal that could earn him up to $1.4 million through bonuses.
While the decision to hand him a contract has been debated by fans and experts alike, Perry’s impact will be tested mainly in the playoffs. He has experienced both successes and failures in his postseason career. His leadership combined with strong offensive play could be crucial in the Oilers’ pursuit of the Stanley Cup
Edmonton Oilers and Dallas Stars picked as Stanley Cup frontrunners per analysts
The NHL.com panel predicted a competitive Stanley Cup race, favoring the Edmonton Oilers and Dallas Stars. Out of 15 contributors, six supported each team for the championship. The defending champions, the Florida Panthers, received one vote.
Last season, Edmonton beat the Stars in the Western Conference Final but lost to the Panthers in the Cup Final. Eight analysts predicted the New York Rangers to reach the finals due to their strong lineup.
For the Conn Smythe Trophy, four panelists picked Connor McDavid to win again, while two chose Leon Draisaitl. The Stars have contenders too, including Wyatt Johnston, Jason Robertson, Jake Oettinger, and Miro Heiskanen.
The NHL season began with the Devils and Sabres playing in the Global Series in Czechia. The North American regular season begins Oct. 8.
The panel also predicted the Panthers in the Atlantic and the Stars in the Central as division winners. Many analysts also picked Edmonton for the Pacific division.
