GLUM Nicola Sturgeon conceded it was a grim night for the SNP in the wake of an exit poll bombshell – as JK Rowling took a pop at the former Nats supremo.

Ms Sturgeon couldn’t hide her dismay after polling stations closed across the country with a Labour landslide expected to propel Keir Starmer into 10 Downing Street.

The polls suggest the SNP could see their seats fall to just 10 MPs at Westminster, delivering a huge blow to the Indy cause.

Ms Sturgeon told of her shock in her election night punditry role on ITV moments after the counts began across the country at 10pm.

She said: “This is the grimmer end of expectations for the SNP if the exit poll is right.

“This is not a good night for the SNP on these numbers and there’ll be a lot of questions that need to be asked as we come out of it.”

Moments later Ms Sturgeon was on the receiving end of a barbed jibe delivered by the Harry Potter author Rowling.

The writer has been a longstanding and harsh critic of the Nats’ gender ID reform policies and couldn’t resist letting rip as details of the SNP’s looming losses emerged.

Rowling posted on X, formerly known as Twitter: “Nobody likes Schadenfreude.

“That said, Nicola Sturgeon’s expression as the exit poll results were announced.”

Ms Sturgeon said in contrast to her party’s woes, Labour would be “jubilant” at the potential results to come.

But when asked how Sir Keir would be feeling at the prospect of becoming the new PM, she warned of the pressure that goes with winning high office.

She said: “Labour will be jubilant tonight. They will be ecstatic.

“It looks as though they have just recorded an absolutely overwhelming victory.

“But regardless of that, regardless of how good a plan you think you have for government, and I think there are big questions about whether Labour does have one, the overwhelming feeling when you walk through the doors – in Keir Starmer’s case Number 10 or in my case Bute House – is just the weight of responsibility.

“You are literally overwhelmed by that in the moment and all of the problems that you have up until that moment been commenting on and blaming somebody else for, they are suddenly in your in-tray and you’re the one that has to try to work out a way through them, navigate a way forward.

“So I’m pretty sure they will get to grips with that quickly.

“Keir Starmer has got a lot of experience in running a big organisation so I am pretty sure he won’t be fazed by it.”
