NHL fans weigh in on Auston Matthews’ goal tally for 2024-25 season (Image via Imagn)
Sportsnet posted a survey question on X on Friday asking fans how many goals Auston Matthews would score this upcoming season. As the replies poured in, some fans took advantage of the opportunity to poke fun at the Toronto Maple Leafs captain.
Here’s a look at some of the humorous responses social media users submitted to this survey on X:
“67 in the entire season. 0 in the playoffs,” one fan chimed in.
“More than 1 goal in the playoffs?” this fan opined.
“No idea, but zero is the number of cups he will win as a Leaf,” another fan commented.
Of course, not all fans chose to make light of the situation. Some fans used the opportunity to make their predictions for Auston Matthews’ final goal tally. Here’s a look at what these fans had to say:
“Based on his career pattern, around 45,” one fan posted on X.
“More goals than any other captain in their first year as captain for the Maple Leafs,” this fan remarked.
“70 would be cool, but realistically, that is hard to repeat. So probably 55 to 60,” another fan weighed in.
It seems the consensus is that Auston Matthews should get at least 50 goals this upcoming season. While some fans believe it will be hard for Matthews to top last year’s 69-goal tally, there’s a chance he could eclipse the 70-goal mark this upcoming campaign.
Auston Matthews appears in commercial wearing an “A” instead of a “C”
The Hockey News reported on a commercial by CCM posted on X on Tuesday featuring Auston Matthews. The spot showcases a new stick, the Ribcor Trigger 9 Pro. The stick incorporates state-of-the-art technology designed for players with a quick release, just like Matthews.
However, the most striking visual in that commercial was on Matthews’ jersey. The commercial shows the newly named Leafs captain wearing an “A” on his jersey instead of a “C.”
That situation was not a mistake. Rather, it is because the ad was filmed before Matthews was named captain. As such, the commercial hit the airwaves with Matthews still playing as an alternate captain.
Nevertheless, fans won’t have to wait long to see Matthews wearing the “C” on his jersey. CCM posted a video on IG wherein Matthews hit the ice donning his new jersey for the first time. The tantalizing preview should give fans plenty to talk about from now till the start of training camp.
In the meantime, the reigning Rocket Richard winner will be gearing up for his first season as the Toronto Maple Leafs’ 26th captain in franchise history.
