NBA transfer: Who was determined not to let LeBron James join the Warriors with Curry?

The connection between LeBron James and Stephen Curry during the recent Olympics has fans imagining the possibility of them playing together on an NBA team.

LeBron James and Stephen Curry recently led the U.S. basketball team to a gold medal at the 2024 Olympics in Paris, France.

Despite being 36 and 39 years old respectively, the veteran teammates demonstrated outstanding leadership and high-level performance, helping the U.S. team overcome every formidable opponent with an undefeated streak extending from the exhibition games to the official matches.

The synergy between LeBron and Curry, coupled with images of the two global basketball stars celebrating together, has greatly excited fans.

Many fans have envisioned a scenario where the “King” and the “Chef” join forces in the NBA, whether it be with the Los Angeles Lakers or the Golden State Warriors. LeBron James himself has mentioned that he enjoys playing with Curry, as evidenced by their All-Star game experiences.

Such a scenario is possible, though the likelihood is extremely low. In fact, the Golden State Warriors contacted the Los Angeles Lakers about six months ago, hoping to bring LeBron James to team up with Stephen Curry at Chase Center.

Of course, this deal did not progress as the Lakers flatly rejected all of the Warriors’ proposals. Additionally, Rich Paul, LeBron’s agent and long-time business partner, was a staunch opponent of James moving to Golden State.

Reputable expert Marc Stein provided further details:

“My sources indicate that Rich Paul blocked both teams from connecting and negotiating (to bring LeBron James to the Warriors). The main reason was that Paul did not want LeBron to become the focal point of criticism from fans for changing teams in pursuit of another championship.

Despite private negotiations between team owners Joe Lacob of the Warriors and Jeanie Buss of the Lakers, along with Draymond Green’s active efforts to facilitate the move, Paul remained vehemently opposed.”

Previously, LeBron James was criticized for leaving the Cleveland Cavaliers to join the Miami Heat in 2010, where he built a super team with Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, and Ray Allen.

It is clear that Rich Paul does not want his client to face public backlash like he did 14 years ago, especially given the more aggressive nature of social media and fan communities today.

As the 2024 Olympic campaign concludes, LeBron James and Stephen Curry will return to their NBA realities, where both the Los Angeles Lakers and Golden State Warriors are only slightly better than mid-tier teams and are not yet contenders for the championship.

For the Los Angeles Lakers, the purple and gold team remained relatively quiet in the recent transfer market. They lost a few key players and missed out on several transfer targets such as DeMar DeRozan, Jonas Valanciunas, and Gary Trent Jr.

On the other hand, no one knows what the Golden State Warriors will look like post-“Splash Brothers” era, especially now that Klay Thompson has bid farewell to the club and joined the Dallas Mavericks.
