Top Maple Leafs prospect Easton Cowan was on the receiving end of a thunderous hit that has left him with what appears to be a serious injury.
After a tough Leafs training camp, Easton Cowan was sent back to the OHL, where he picked up right where he left off last season, scoring-wise.
Cowan unofficially set a new record on Friday night against another Leafs’ first-round pick in Ben Danford and the Oshawa Generals, registering a point for the 56th consecutive game, recording a whopping 94 points (38 goals, 56 assists) in that time.
The record-setting moment comes on the heels of of being named to Team Canada’s World Junior selection camp and unofficially broke Leafs alum Doug Gilmour’s record of 55 games consecutive games with a point during the 1982-83 season.
Unfortunately for Cowan, after setting the new record, he was forced to leave the game after he took a massive hit from Generals defenceman Zack Sandhu that left both players shaken up.
At the time, Cowan was looking down and attempting to corral a pass in the neutral zone when Sandhu stepped up and caught Cowan with what was deemed to be a clean, but massive, hit.
Although both players felt the affects of the hit, Cowan ended up leaving the game and not returning. There was no immediate update following the game, and now Cowan’s availability for Team Canada is in question as he was supposed to report to selection camp next week.
