Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews recently met with the media, and one of the players he spoke about was Leafs winger Bobby McMann.
After being a healthy scratch for the season opener, Bobby McMann returned to the lineup last Thursday against the New Jersey Devils and quickly made an impact, scoring midway through the first period. He was held off the scoresheet during the Leafs’ home opener, but added a pair of goals on Wednesday in the Leafs’ 6-2 victory over the LA Kings.
As part of the newly dubbed ‘BMW’ line, McMann, Max Domi and William Nylander have been on a torrid pace since being put together ahead of last Saturday’s home opener, including a big night for the line on Wednesday, combining for six points against the Kings.
Following practice on Thursday, Matthews was asked about McMann’s hot start and why he’s been so successful through three games.
“He just looks hungry out there & he’s making plays, making good on his opportunities He works extremely hard”
The Leafs wanted to create competition in training camp this year and throughout the regular season in the hopes that it would force players to bring their best efforts night in and night out. That philosophy has paid off early for McMann, as he looks to secure a roster spot amid the impending returns of Connor Dewar and Calle Jarnkrok.
Hosting the New York Rangers on Saturday night, the ‘BMW’ line will look to build on their momentum from their past two games while the Leafs will look to win their fourth straight after dropping the first game of the season to the Montreal Canadiens.
