Jani Hakanpaa is making significant progress in his recovery from injury and is inching closer to a return to the NHL.
Hakanpaa is eager to get back on the ice, and his return is drawing near. Earlier this week, Hakanpaa and teammate Connor Dewar were assigned to the AHL’s Toronto Marlies for conditioning stints.
Hakanpaa has taken a major step forward during his stint, expressing his excitement at being back on the ice. Reflecting on his first professional game since his injury, Hakanpaa shared his thoughts via Mark Masters on X:
“It was a big milestone for me personally. It’s been a lot of long days getting here, but once you’re here it’s all worth it”When asked about his return to game action, Hakanpaa added:
“I was smiling all yesterday just having that feeling inside of me”
on landing his first hit:
“It really did feel good. It’s really gets your blood flowing. It’s something you don’t get anywhere else”
Hakanpaa’s excitement to return to the NHL and contribute to the Maple Leafs is mirrored by the organization and its fans. Standing at 6’7″ and weighing 225 pounds, Hakanpaa brings a physical presence that the Leafs currently lack-a big, strong defender who excels in puck battles, hits hard, and is exceptional on the defensive end. His style of play could complement the Leafs’ needs, making him a perfect fit for a Craig Berube style team that values physicality and defensive stability.
The main question now is how the Maple Leafs will make room for both Hakanpaa and Dewar on the roster, as the team’s roster is currently at capacity. While this may seem like a challenge, having too much depth is a problem many teams would welcome, especially in Toronto, where competition for spots can only strengthen the squad.
