After third baseman Alex Bregman declined the Houston Astros’ $156 million standing offer to re-sign him, it remains to be seen if the front office will make a better offer.
Bregman has entered free agency after his five-year deal with Houston ended this year. He’s reportedly looking to cash in and sign a big contract this winter.
On the Baseball Today podcast, former MLB third baseman Trevor Plouffe suggested that the Astros should trade Kyle Tucker for a haul of prospects and make the the financial room to offer Bregman a bigger contract:
“I know it’s a crushing blow to that team because Kyle Tucker is one of the best hitters in all of baseball,” Plouffe said.
“But if you’re gonna just have him for one year and then offer him the qualifying offer, I think I’d rather keep Alex Bregman, get prospects and then trade him this year.”
Alex Bregman has been with the Houston Astros since getting drafted in 2015 and has grown into one of their best players after making his major league debut in 2016.
In 2019, he signed a five-year, $100 million contract with the Astros, which has been one of the steals of the past decade. Now entering free agency at 30, Bregman is reportedly looking for a contract over $200 million.
Philadelphia Phillies reportedly interested in signing Alex Bregman as a replacement for Alec Bohm next season
With the MLB Winter Meetings around the corner, it’s likely that Alex Bregman’s future with the Houston Astros will be decided in the next few days. According to reports, the Philadelphia Phillies are looking to trade third baseman Alec Bohm and see Bregman as the ideal replacement.
The two-time All-Star brings a lot of experience and productive numbers to whichever team manages to sign him this winter. While there’s no doubt that he would prefer to remain in Houston, a bigger offer from the likes of Philadelphia could convince him to make the move.
