‘Harry Potter’ author J.K. Rowling has revealed she has turned down the chance to be made a Dame for ‘personal reasons’ after a fan called for her to be given the title

J. K. Rowling, the literary sensation behind the ‘Harry Potter’ series, has declined a Damehood.

Despite her massive success and being honored with an Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2001 for her contributions to children’s literature, she doesn’t wish for any further accolades. Responding to a fan on X who suggested she should be made a Dame, Rowling expressed her gratitude but firmly stated: “I really, truly appreciate the sentiment but in fact I’ve already turned down both a damehood and a peerage.”

The acclaimed author, also known as Robert Galbraith, cited “personal reasons” for her decision, emphasizing that she never desired a title by adding, “This is for entirely personal reasons, ie, I’ve never wanted a title. Thank you, though.”

Rowling, despite her global fame, recently confessed to The Sunday Times that she had difficulty seeing herself as a “real writer” even after the publication of her first ‘Harry Potter’ book in 1997. Reflecting on the whirlwind of success, she recalled significant milestones like winning the Smarties Book Prize in 1997 and receiving a record advance from America, which led to her exclaiming, “I was overjoyed [when I made the bestsellers list] because it felt like something that happened to real writers.

“I can’t overstate how timid I was about calling myself a writer. Even after I was published, I hesitated to say it out loud because I’d wanted it for so long and didn’t want to jinx myself.”

Despite her potential to be recognized with the royal title, she has faced immense backlash from fans over the recent years. After the buzz around the Harry Potter franchise simmered a bit, Rowling came forward with her starkly anti-transgender positions, self identifying as a trans exclusionary radical feminist (TERF).

She has been at the forefront of the bathroom debate which contemplates whether or not transwomen should be allowed in the women’s restroom. Rowling said: “When you throw open the doors of bathrooms and changing rooms to any man who believes or feels he’s a woman — and, as I’ve said, gender confirmation certificates may now be granted without any need for surgery or hormones — then you open the door to any and all men who wish to come inside. That is the simple truth.”

Rowling also took notable aim at Imane Khelif during the Olympics, speculating on the boxer’s gender identity and sex. The author was subsequently named in a lawsuit for alleged cyberbullying.
