Not long after the Boston Bruins treaded Linus Ullmark to the Ottawa Senators, goaltender Jeremy Swayman’s recent comments about the team have raised concerns that he may be traded.
The Boston Bruins have used the tandem goaltending strategy for the past few years. Given their caliber in the last few seasons, many attributed this to their recent success. However, with increased returns come increased costs, and the team could no longer afford both. After their run ended in the second round of the 2024 Stanley Cup playoffs, the Boston Bruins decided their best choice moving forward was with 25-year-old Jeremy Swayman. The team traded former Vezina Trophy winner Linus Ullmark to the Ottawa Senators in exchange for Mark Kastelic, Joonas Korpisalo, and the pick used to draft Dean Letourneau.
However, the Boston Bruins have had enormous difficulty finishing contract negotiations with Jeremy Swayman. With the season so close, fans have grown concerned that he may not be a sure thing in next year’s lineup. After he spoke about his current situation working toward a deal, he seemed lackadaisical, leaving all of the work to his agent, regardless of the outcome.
“I do love it, and that’s all I can control, and I know that. I have complete trust in my agent and I know that it’s going to get done eventually[…]
I’m getting just as much experience right now as I did last year, with different ways of it all. And we know, it’s a business. It’s unfortunate at times, but I know I’m gonna be playing hockey at the end of the day. And I really hope with it’s the Boston Bruins.”
Jeremy Swayman is currently an RFA and ranked by the NHL networks as the league’s fourth-best goaltender. Yet, the Boston Bruins have only a little over $8.6 million in cap space, which is unlikely to satisfy his needs. Hopefully, both parties can work out a deal, otherwise, Jeremy Swayman will have to play elsewhere in the NHL.
