When Caitlin Clark raved about why Iowa’s arena is a nightmare for Big Ten opponents (image credit: getty)
Caitlin Clark has arguably become the face of the Indiana Fever after having a spectacular rookie season. However, becoming the face of a franchise is nothing new for her as she held the same role for her college team.
Clark played for the Iowa Hawkeyes in the NCAA. In her final two seasons, she led them to back-to-back championship game appearances, although they lost both. However, the then-Hawkeyes star took pride in her team’s achievement and its arena.
She once raved about the atmosphere at Carver-Hawkeye Arena and how playing there was a nightmare for other teams in the Big Ten Conference.
“I think, you know, you want to be that team that’s starred on people’s schedule,” Clark said in 2022 (11:36). “You don’t wanna be a team that they don’t look forward to playing. That’s when you know you are good. People are excited to play you and they wanna beat you. That’s the most important thing.”
Clark expressed her thoughts in the eighth episode of season 4 of “The Heartland” series covering the weekly journey of the Iowa Hawkeyes. That episode and more are available to watch on the Hawkeyes’ YouTube channel.
She added that other teams in the Big Ten enjoyed playing at Iowa because the arena was filled with excited fans who wanted to see them play.
Iowa Hawkeyes unveil the date for Caitlin Clark’s jersey retirement
Catlin Clark did not win an NCAA title but she left the world of college basketball as one of the greatest players to play at that level. During her three seasons with the Iowa Hawkeyes, Clark was named Naismith College Player of the Year twice and Big Ten Player of the Year thrice, among other awards.
On the statistical end, Clark left as the NCAA Division I’s all-time leading scorer. So when Iowa announced that they were going to retire Clark’s jersey, her fans were thrilled.
On Wednesday, Iowa Women’s Basketball’s X account revealed that the jersey retirement ceremony will be on Feb. 2.
The X post featured a tribute video for Clark. The clip starts with Clark shooting a 3-pointer and then fades to a banner with her jersey number on it.
