“How do you throw a pitch with someone?”: Fans react to Matthew Tkachuk & Jayson Tatum’s first pitch together at Cardinals game / Picture credit: Imagn
Florida Panthers winger Matthew Tkachuk and Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum threw out the ceremonial first pitch at the Los Angeles Dodgers-St. Louis Cardinals baseball game in St. Louis on Sunday. This entailed a lot of reactions from fans on X (formerly Twitter).
“This is so wonderful, two childhood classmates and friends finally winning championships in the same year and returning to the city where they went to school to share it all with everyone after years of hard work, adversity, and injuries. A dream come true. Congratulations,” a fan weighed in.
“How do you throw a pitch with someone?” another fan chimed in.
While Matthew and Jayson won’t be switching to baseball any time soon, it was great to see two old friends celebrating their respective championships. Now, fans will hope to see both the Florida Panthers and Boston Celtics defend their titles in the upcoming season.
Matthew Tkachuk’s connection to St. Louis remains strong
Matthew Tkachuk and his brother Brady, captain of the Ottawa Senators, are children of former NHL great Keith Tkachuk. The senior Tkachuk debuted in 1991 with the original Winnipeg Jets. After four full seasons in Winnipeg, Keith moved with the Jets to Phoenix.
That situation explains why Matthew was born in Arizona. However, Matthew’s connection to St. Louis stems from Keith’s time with the St. Louis Blues. The elder Tkachuk played six seasons in St. Louis before departing for one year to Atlanta. Afterwards, Keith played three more years with the Blues to end his career.
Meanwhile, Matthew attended Chaminade College Preparatory School in St. Louis—where he met Tatum. Matthew left after the ninth grade to pursue his hockey career with the US National Development Team.
Matthew was eventually drafted 6th overall by the Calgary Flames in 2016, then was traded to the Panthers in 2022. However, Matthew has never let go of his connection to St. Louis, proudly showing that he still feels like a member of the local community.
