Emilia Clarke comments on her possible return as Deanerys Targaryen in the announced Game of Thrones spinoff about Kit Harington’s Jon Snow.
Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke comments on her possible return as Daenerys Targaryen in the announced Jon Snow spinoff show. After first airing in 2011, Game of Thrones came to an end in 2019, with audiences seemingly saying a final farewell to the show’s host of characters. Kit Harington’s Jon Snow, however, was later announced to be getting his own spinoff show, which the actor himself is said to have brought to HBO.
In a recent interview with Extra, Clarke comments on her possible return for the Jon Snow Game of Thrones spinoff show. With Daenerys having died in the final season of the main show, though, Clarke seems quite certain that audiences won’t be seeing her character again. Check out the actor’s full comment or watch the interview below (relevant section begins at 2:56):
“I don’t think so. Kit, I love you. I’ma watch that one because of you or I’m gonna tell you that I did, but I won’t be in it. No, I don’t think so. He hasn’t called.”
Daenerys Not Returning Is For The Best
After he makes the difficult decision to kill Daenerys, who had completely gone off the rails at this point and been killing innocent King’s Landing civilians, Jon is essentially banished to life back in the North as part of the Night’s Watch. The last audiences see of Harington’s character in the divisive Game of Thrones finale is of him riding off to a life beyond the Wall with the Wildlings. The spinoff would seemingly pick up after these events, chronicling Jon’s new life.
While Clarke delivered a strong performance as Daenerys and her character was frequently a high point of the show, her story is very much over now. Daenerys’ descent into becoming the Mad Queen may have been rushed, but it did happen, and her death was fairly definitive. The only apparent way she could return at this point would be through flashbacks or hallucinations from Jon. This, however, would only serve to keep the Jon Snow spinoff stuck in the past, rehashing and recontextualizing the Game of Thrones ending instead of blazing new ground.
The Game of Thrones ending was especially controversial, meaning the best path forward for a spinoff about Snow, if such a show happens at all, would be to create some distance between itself and its predecessor. By focusing on an entirely new story with new supporting characters, the spinoff could stand on its own two feet instead of leaning on what’s come before. Otherwise, the spinoff could just end up serving as a reminder of what audiences didn’t like about the Game of Thrones ending.
