HC Craig Berube said after Mitch Marner accidentally shoots multiple pucks at Leafs bench – Source: Imagn
Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube had an amusing reaction after forward Mitch Marner accidentally shot multiple pucks towards the Leafs bench during their 5-3 win against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday night.
It was an eventful night for the Leafs, who improved their record to 14-7-2 on the season with the win over the Lightning. Matthew Knies, Christopher Tanev, Nicholas Robertson, William Nylander and John Tavares scored the Leafs.
“I almost got hit twice. I gotta talk to Mitch.I don’t know if he’s pissed off at me or what. I guess he needs more ice time,” Berube said.
On the team’s performance, Berube said:
“I thought that early on in the game we were just a little bit off, but we got going. I thought later on in the first and the second period and then, you know, the third got hairy, to say the least with what went on, but we pulled it out.”
He pointed out some areas needing improvement, particularly when defending against the extra attacker late in the game:
“I thought with the goalie out, we were a little bit tentative and didn’t win enough battles and things like that. I thought we can do a better job, we let him move it around too easily in my opinion. But, you know, it’s something we’ll look at and get better at.”
Marner had two assists in the win. The Leafs ultimately held on despite Tampa Bay scoring through goals from Cameron Atkinson, Michael Eyssimont and Jake Guentzel in the third period. Joseph Woll made 38 saves. Andrei Vasilevskiy stopped 24 shots in the loss.
Craig Berube on Auston Matthews and Matthew Knies’s performance after return
Auston Matthews was sidelined for the last nine games due to an undisclosed injury, while Matthew Knies missed the previous two games because of an upper-body issue.
Head coach Craig Berube Berube was pleased with how both players looked on their return to action.
“They were fine. They had a pretty solid game,” Craig Berube said post-game. “Matthews had been out a while, but he did some good things. I thought he was strong on pucks. I thought he moved well out there. He did a lot of good things. Same with Knies.”
The Leafs’ next game comes Monday night at home against the Chicago Blackhawks.
