Harry Potter fans are on the fence about the reboot so soon after the films wrapped, but, if done well, it could become a major success. HBO and Warner Bros. have a successful history of adapting beloved IPs and the new update is encouraging.
Per Variety, Warner Bros. TV chairman and CEO Channing Dungey attended Mipcom in Cannes, and also addressed some of the studios’ upcoming projects. Among them, was also the much-discussed Harry Potter TV series. Details are scarce about what’s going to happen and how HBO will tackle the series, but Dungey proclaimed himself a “huge fan of the books,” an encouraging feat in hoping for a more faithful adaptation.
Although Harry Potter’s casting for the character was sublime, Saoirse Ronan would’ve also been perfect for the role.
Dungey teased the upcoming Harry Potter series and explained that the “writing staff was in place and theyre doing what they need to do, and casting calls have opened up in the U.K. and Ireland, so the process is moving along.” In early September, Warner Bros. posted a casting call for the Golden Trio, made up of Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley. The submission deadline was a very important Harry Potter date of Oct. 31, 2024, and so far, no decisions have been made.
Dungey added that working with the Harry Potter universe was an “unbelievable dream, honestly, and as somebody who is a huge fan of the books, the opportunity to get to explore them in a little bit more in-depth that you can in just a two-hour film… thats the whole reason were on this journey.”

The eight Harry Potter films that adapted J.K. Rowling’s seven novels between 2001 and 2011 were not perfect adaptations, yet they are universally beloved. Due to the length of a feature film, many scenes had to be cut, adapted, or forgotten altogether, leading to many storylines or characters like Peeves missing.
As Warner Bros. announced the Harry Potter TV series in April 2023, it also came with the promise of a more faithful adaptation. The pledge was for a ten-year project, and it would adapt a book per season. Although not all the books are as action-filled as the last three, it does give the advantage of expanding the characters, building the universe, and establishing details that didn’t make it to the films.
When Will the Harry Potter TV Series Premiere?
So far, there is no official release date for the Harry Potter series. The casting call is still searching for the main characters, who are expected to be between the ages of 9 and 11 from the U.K. and Ireland. Although nothing has been announced yet, it’s expected that the new actors will be newcomers. There have been several encouraging details that the series will be focused on “inclusive, diverse casting.”

Draco Malfoy was a product of his environment, but what if everything would’ve been different?
The original actors are not expected to return at this time in the project, although some of them, like Gary Oldman, have expressed their interest in coming back. It’s unclear how Warner Bros. will tackle the casting for the rest of the actors, whether young or older.
Although no release date is set in stone yet, there are some details we do know. Writing for the script has started, and Francesca Gardiner will serve as one of the writers and showrunner, with Mark Mylod set to direct several episodes. The series has a tentative 2025 production start, the latest series update teased it’s expected sometime in “late 2026-2027,” which means quite a very long wait.
Until then, the eight Harry Potter films are available to stream on Peacock.
