Pete Alonso’s free agency has taken longer than expected, as the New York Mets are yet to agree to a deal. Alonso made it clear that he wants to remain with the team in Queens. As for the Mets, they are not ready to match his offer just yet. Or, as many believe, they are just waiting for the market to drop.
Alonso’s stunning 2024 season helped the Mets, and many thought he would sign right after Juan Soto. Alonso and the Mets are negotiating, and his camp has already put out a short-term deal. The Polar Bear has made this offer exclusive for the Mets alone. A three-year deal with opt-outs is ready for the taking if the Mets decide.
The Mets and Alonso’s saga has been going on for a long time now, and many MLB enthusiasts are getting tired. Recently, WFAN’s broadcaster Keith McPherson called out the team for delaying Pete Alonso’s contract.
“Man, give Pete Alonso the money he’s earned after all these years, and worry about the future in the future. It’s not gonna hurt your pockets at all,” McPherson said.
He further said that Cohen has enough money to pursue Alonso easily.
“This guy is made out of money. We already saw him trade away contracts. Now, all of a sudden, you can’t do right by Pete Alonso? Because you have young talent coming up? Because David Stearns is telling you to evaluate the young guys?” McPherson continued via Audacy.
Alex Bregman Stands In The Way For Pete Alonso
Alonso is not the only top free-agent slugger available in the market. Alex Bregman is looking for a team, and he has more chances to seal a deal first, as many believe. Bregman and Alonso will be on a team before the regular season.
However, a late signing will make things worse for both sluggers, especially if they miss spring training. The Boston Red Sox are linked to Bregman, and Alonso seems to have his mind fixed on the Mets.
Scott Boras will play his part in signing Pete Alonso in some way or another. Hopefully, the slugger will seal a deal before spring training. Jesse Winker is another Mets player who is predicted to sign with a team.
