Coach John Tortorella addressed yet another loss for the Philadelphia Flyers, noting that his team fell too far behind against the Montreal Canadiens. Although they scored two late goals, it wasn’t enough to turn the game around, resulting in their record dropping to 2-6-1 for the season.
“I think everyone’s frustrated because they want to win, but I don’t think the frustration is overtaking the team,” Tortorella said in his press conference (1:40). “We just have so many guys struggling offensively that it’s tough to generate.”
A reporter asked if the coach was surprised that his team struggled to play with fives since it’s largely the same team and coaching staff as last year.
“Yeah, a little,” the coach said. “There are so many guys who are fighting it a bit. Tippett’s fighting it. Tyson, 14 minutes tonight, not a shot on goal. This is the year that the players who got better last year need to improve even more, but we’re kind of stuck.”
John Tortorella singled out Owen Tippett, who is signed to an eight-year, $49,600,000 deal. He also mentioned Tyson Foerster for not getting a shot in his entire time on the ice. It all led to another loss in the early going of what looks to be another challenging season in Philadelphia.
John Tortorella addresses the team’s status in 2024
Following a successful season last year, the Philadelphia Flyers were expected to take the next step in 2024. So for, they have not. Even before the recent setback to the Canadiens, the coach said that the club is still growing.

John Tortorella said via NBC Sports Philadelphia:
“We’re young, we’re rebuilding, we are going to take some gut punches. But we’re better than this. Easy. We’re going to get slapped around a little bit here. We are. We’re just young.
“We have been very transparent. Two years — this year and next year — we’re not bringing in free agents. We have to develop our kids.”
With that in mind, the early record isn’t too shocking, and it seems to fit with where Tortorella believes his team is in the grand scheme of things.
