Blackhawks captain Nick Foligno responds to being concerned after first loss (Image Source: Imagn)
The Hawks fell 5-2 to Utah Hockey Club in their season opener, with Utah securing their inaugural franchise win in front of a sell-out crowd at Delta Center.
Nick Foligno reflected on the Blackhawks’ performance, acknowledging that the team struggled to match Utah’s intensity in the first period. He expressed that he’s not worried about the loss and believes that the team gave their best.
Foligno emphasized that if they start converting their scoring chances and maintain the same level of play, they will be in a good position as the season continues (via Chicago Sun Times):
“I’m not concerned. I think we turned a corner already on that. I see a way different team this game. … If we start burying those chances and play like we did the second and third, I think we’re going to like where we’re sitting.”
Utah HC took an early lead, with goals from Dylan Guenther and Clayton Keller giving them a 2-0 advantage going into the second period. Barrett Hayton extended the lead to 3-0 for the home team at 8:46.
The Blackhawks bounced back with Connor Bedard assisting Teuvo Teravainen and Nick Foligno, cutting the deficit to 3-2. However, the Hawks were unable to convert several opportunities, including a shot from Tyler Bertuzzi that hit the post late on. This near-miss could have tied the game with less than a minute remaining.
Eventually, Utah capitalized, scoring twice late on to secure a historic win.
Utah HC coach praises team’s maturity and leadership shown against Blackhawks
Utah coach Andre Tourigny praised his team’s maturity against the Blackhawks, highlighting the effective leadership displayed by the players. He said (via NHL.com):
“What I did like is the maturity we showed during the game,” Utah coach Andre Tourigny said. “Our leaders did a great job to make sure we stay level as much as possible. … There were nerves and stuff like that, but I really liked the message on the bench.”
Tourigny’s comments reflect confidence in the team’s ability to handle pressure and navigate challenging moments. He will look for that same level of maturity and leadership from his players when they take on the New York Islanders on Thursday.
