The New York Knicks waived Landry Shamet on Saturday after the preseason’s conclusion. Shamet was on an Exhibit 9 contract. Given how the Knicks waived him, they only have to pay him $15,000, leaving the team with extra cash to spend on signing free agents.

It’s worth noting that Shamet suffered a dislocated shoulder against the Charlotte Hornets during the preseason. If things remain optimistic for his injuries, New York could likely save a spot for Shamet on the roster. But if things turn out otherwise, then they could go all out on the available free agents.

According to the New York Post, the Knicks are hoping to sign Marcus Morris Sr. or Lonnie Walker IV to replace Landry Shamet. Due to the Mikal Bridges trade, the franchise has approximately $3.5 million to play with. However, the budget is sufficient to convert a rookie contract and sign Shamet or one of their preferred free agents.

Looking at the New York Knicks’ target free agents

The Knicks showed promise last season when they secured the second seed in the Eastern Conference. Despite losing Julius Randle in their lineup due to injuries, Jalen Brunson stepped up and led his team to elite status.

In the playoffs, the Indiana Pacers came up with a shocking upset, eliminating the Knicks 4-3. Nevertheless, the Knicks proved they had what it takes to keep up with the best teams. While Brunson did make the All-Star game last season, it was only his first.

The Knicks look to go all out with Karl-Anthony Towns and Mikal Bridges on their roster. However, they still have an extra slot for a free agent. The question now is, who could be the perfect fit? New York is looking at Lonnie Walker IV and Marcus Morris Sr.

Looking at their choices, both are great picks. Marcus Morris Sr. is a veteran in the game and can reinforce the paint alongside the New York Knicks big men. However, if New York wants to pick up a younger option, Lonnie Walker IV is an ideal get as well.

Walker proved to be a lethal offensive option for the LA Lakers in the 2022–23 season. His efforts helped the Lakers nearly shock the world after making the Western Conference Finals despite the team having a poor regular season.

If the New York Knicks are looking for more firepower, then Walker could be the way to go.
