While the Vancouver Canucks have been nearly unbeatable away from the friendly confines of Rogers Arena in downtown Vancouver, their record in front of their home fans hasn’t been exactly spectacular.
Unfortunately, they missed out on another chance to improve their home ice record, suffering a 4-3 loss to the visiting St. Louis Blues in overtime. It also featured the return of goaltender Thatcher Demko for the first time since Game 1 of the postseason last spring.
The game started well enough, as forward Dakota Joshua picked up his first goal of the season since returning from missing the first few weeks of the campaign while recovering from off-season surgery to remove a cancerous tumor from one of his testicles.
The Blues soon grabbed a 3-1 lead thanks to goals from Robert Thomas, Zack Bolduc and Jordan Kyrou. The Canucks got one back with the eighth tally of the year from Elias Pettersson, followed by the game-tying goal late in regulation from the red-hot Jake DeBrusk.
The Blues grabbed the extra point in overtime thanks to first-year St. Louis forward Dylan Holloway’s 10th goal.
In his return to action, Demko made 21 saves on the 25 shots he faced, while Blues goalie Joel Hofer earned the win by making 22 stops.

#1. Conor Garland
He’s had a positive impact on the Vancouver Canucks this season, but Garland’s terrible turnover directly led to Robert Thomas’ shorthanded goal in the first period. Cameras immediately panned to Garland, who was visibly agitated by his mistake.
#2. Thatcher Demko
While it may seem unfair to include Demko on the list considering it was his first game back in over half a calendar year, he still allowed four goals in his opening game of the season.
His game wasn’t without highlights, as he made a critical stop on a St. Louis 2-on-0 opportunity to prevent them from taking a 4-2 lead early in the third period.
It’s a start for Demko, who may need some time to return to the elite status that Canucks fans are accustomed to seeing.
#3. Carson Soucy
While his opening penalty didn’t immediately result in a Blues goal, Soucy did finish the evening with a minus-1 rating and was the first of three Vancouver Canucks penalties on the night, the latter two of which would prove costly.
