Edmonton Oilers Darnell Nurse shared his response to Oiles fan’s boo on Holloway and Broberg (Source: Imagn)
Darnell Nurse shared his thoughts on Edmonton Oilers fans booing ex-teammates Dylan Holloway and Philip Broberg after their return to Edmonton on Saturday.
Nurse told Oilers reporter Daniel Nugent-Bowman, who tweeted that it was pretty funny to hear the boos.
“It was pretty funny. (Laughs.)” Nurse said. “I’ve never seen the boos (like that before). I brought some atmosphere and energy to the rink. Those are two guys that we think very highly of as teammates.”
Holloway and Broberg returned to Edmonton with the St. Louis Blues for the first time. Fans’ boos likely stemmed from the offer sheet drama earlier during the offseason.
Oilers’ new general manager Stan Bowman was placed in a difficult situation to retain Holloway and Broberg after they received significant offer sheets from St. Louis Blues. But Bowman was restrained due to cap constraints and the two players signed with the Blues.
However, Darnell Nurse noted that now they are on the other side, so it’s up to fans.
“They were great teammates to us. But now they’re on the other side, so if they’re getting booed, they’re getting booed.” Nurse said with a smile.
Nevetheless, the game itself was a solid one for the Oilers.
Darnell Nurse praises team’s efforts in 4-2 win
Corey Perry opened the scoring in the first period, with a shot redirected by Darnell Nurse. In the second period, Connor McDavid scored on a giveaway by Broberg, making it 2-0 for the Oilers. Zach Hyman added a goal on the power play to give Edmonton a 3-0 lead.
In the third period, Holloway scored for the Blues, cutting the lead to 3-1. Jake Neighbours added a power-play goal for St. Louis, bringing the score to 3-2. However, Troy Stecher scored his first goal as an Oiler to restore the two-goal lead as the Oilers held on to win 4-2.
Stuart Skinner was solid in goal, stopping 29 of 31 shots. Blues goalie Jordan Binnington struggled, making only 17 saves on 21 shots. Talking about the game, Darnell Nurse said:
“Yeah, you know, we definitely competed. It was a tough game, start to finish. They’re a team that plays hard, plays heavy. I think I heard St. talk about how the start of our third wasn’t the way we expect to come out and start games, especially when we have leads.
“With that said, we found a way to capitalize in a big moment and stop that 3-2 and work from there. Skinner was a huge part of that.”
The Oilers next face the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday.
