Fans react as Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson wears Oilers jersey after losing bet
The Dallas Stars and Edmonton Oilers went head-to-head in the Western Conference finals, with the mayors of each city’s team making a friendly wager on the outcome. Edmonton Mayor Amarjeet Sohi challenged Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson on Twitter, proposing that the losing mayor would have to wear the winning team’s jersey and wish them luck in the Stanley Cup Final.
The Oilers defeated the Stars in six games, advancing to the Stanley Cup Final against the Florida Panthers.
Today, Mayor Johnson posted a video on Twitter wearing an Oilers jersey and congratulating the team, saying:
“A bet is a bet.”
The sight of the Dallas mayor wearing the orange and blue jersey of a division rival sparked plenty of reactions from hockey fans on social media. Many were amused by Mayor Johnson’s good sportsmanship.
One fan jokingly commented:
“Bro got the women’s jersey on 😂”
On the other hand, a fan complimented the mayor’s attire:
“Great video and pep talk! The Oilers jersey looks fab on you!”
Another fan appreciated the Dallas mayor for honoring the bet.
“I have to say, the Dallas Stars and Texans are classy and respectful. One of the best in the NHL. Hope to see you guys again next year in the Western Conference finals.”
“Classy just classy. Like I said that was one of the best series all playoffs. Dallas fans are humble and great. Truly a great organization and city,” another fan wrote.

Oilers’ flag hoisted at Vancouver City Hall following Round 2 win
The mayors of Edmonton and Vancouver made a friendly wager before the Oilers and Canucks met in the second round of the NHL playoffs. Whoever’s team lost would have to raise the winning team’s flag at their city hall and wear the winning team’s jersey.
Edmonton won the Round 2 in seven games, meaning Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim had to pay up. Video emerged showing the orange and blue flag of Edmonton hoisted at Vancouver City Hall.
Mayor Sim also posted a photo of himself wearing an Edmonton jersey while congratulating the team on advancing. Edmonton Mayor Amarjeet Sohi responded lightheartedly on X, thanking Sim for being such a good sport about the wager:
“Orange and blue looks good on you.”
Sohi concluded by saying he looks forward to a rematch next season in the playoffs.
