Corbin Burnes is said to be on his way to the Arizona Diamondbacks next season. Burnes had multiple teams behind him, but the D’backs got to him first. The All-Star pitcher has been a free agent for a long time,e and he’s finally heading to the NL West.
Burnes had an outstanding season with the Baltimore Orioles and had a huge demand for a starting pitcher. He was one of the top free-agent starting pitchers on the market. The Diamondbacks were not a huge favorite to sign Burnes, but they beat the odds and took a huge leap.
The Giants, Yankees, and a few other teams were previously favorites to pursue Burnes. According to multiple reports and MLB insider Jon Heyman, Corbin Burnes and the Diamondbacks have agreed to a $210 million six-year contract.
Burnes recorded one of the best ERAs in the league last season. The talented pitcher had a 2.92 ERA in 194.1 innings pitched. He carried the Orioles in crucial moments and helped them make it to the playoffs. Burnes struck out 181 opponent hitters and surrendered only 63 earned runs.
Corbin Burnes To Have An Opt-Out In His Contract With The D’backs
Burnes will have an opt-out clause with his current contract in Arizona. The pitcher can choose to opt-out after two years. The Diamondbacks needed a top pitcher, and Burnes seemed to fit the bill.
The Diamondbacks are looking for a strong comeback after failing to make the playoffs in 2024. Burnes could be their ace and help bolster their starting rotation. The 2021 Cy Young Award Winner built a strong career with the Milwaukee Brewers before making it to Baltimore.
The Orioles are missing out on a top pitcher from their squad and will need to find a strong replacement. As for Arizona, they have acquired one of the best pitchers in the league. The Diamondbacks could be back in the playoffs race if the add a few more key players like Corbin Burnes.
Burnes’ free agency has been slow, but his six-year contract with the team will help secure the tail end of his career. MLB rumors continue to swirl as Nick Pivetta is predicted to sign with an unexpected team.
