Prominent NHL agent Allan Walsh has criticized hockey historian Stan Fischler for his remarks regarding Igor Shesterkin.
Fischler tweeted that Rangers received better goaltending from Jonathan Quick, who’s earning significantly less and implied that Shesterkin needs to improve following a disappointing performance against the Buffalo Sabres between the pipes.
“For millions of dollars less, the @NYRanger got better goaltending in Detroit from Non-Inflationary #JonathanQuick than the Inflationary Poor Little Rich Boy who’d better do better next time out than he did vs. Buffalo. Peter Laviolette should stick with hot goalie, QUICK-LY,” Fischler posted.
In response, Wlsh condemned Fischler’s remarks, calling them “disgraceful” and stating that the 92-year-old hockey historian has a history of disparaging players, their salaries and the NHL Players’ Association.
“There has never been a “journalist” who has consistently hated on players, their salaries or the NHLPA more than this guy. Do you criticize the highest paid doctors, dentists, hedge fund managers? Never a word about NHL owners making billions off their franchises. Disgraceful.”
In the Rangers’ 6-1 loss to the Buffalo Sabres last week, Igor Shesterkin had a lopsided performance in the net. The 28-year-old netminder conceded five goals and posted a .583 SV% before getting replaced by Jonathan Quick.
Latest on Igor Shesterkin’s contract with the Rangers
NHL Insider Kevin Weekes recently indicated on X/Twitter that Igor Shesterkin and the New York Rangers might be nearing a new contract agreement.
Weekes hinted that Shesterkin could sign an eight-year, $11.5 million per season. If the deal gets through, the Russian netminder would become the highest-paid goalie in the NHL, surpassing Montreal Canadiens’ Carey Price, who earns $10.5 million annually.
However, other reports regarding Shesterkin’s potential contract extension suggest that the situation remains uncertain, with no definitive agreement in place at this time.
Shesterkin is in the final year of his four-year, $22 million contract, which has a cap hit of $5.56 million per season. He has had an impressive start this season, posting a 6-3-1 record with a 2.62 GAA and a .920 save percentage in 10 games.
It remains to be seen how the situation unfolds in the future. Meanwhile, the New York Rangers (9-3-1) return to action against the league-toppers, the Winnipeg Jets (14-1-0), on Tuesday. The puck at MSG drops at 7 p.m. ET.
