3 reasons why Edmonton Oilers & Mark Giordano may be a good fit (Image source – IMAGN)
Veteran blue liner Mark Giordano could be on his way to the Edmonton Oilers. According to reports, Giordano’s agent Rich Winter confirmed Giordano’s camp has been in talks with at least half a dozen clubs, including the Oilers.
Giordano has spent parts of the last three seasons with the Toronto Maple Leafs. While a return to Toronto is on Giordano’s radar, it seems the Edmonton Oilers could be the best fit for the 41-year-old former Norris Trophy winner.
So, here’s a look at three reasons why Mark Giordano and the Edmonton Oilers could be a good fit.

3 reasons why Edmonton Oilers & Mark Giordano may be a good fit
#3: Giordano comes cheap
Giordano won’t cost the Oilers much. Last season, Giordano had an $800K deal with the Leafs. That sort of deal would be perfect for the cap-strapped Edmonton Oilers.
The Oilers currently have roughly $950K in available cap space, according to PuckPedia. That’s just enough room to fit Giordano under the cap. Most importantly, the club could keep Giordano around, even as a seventh defenseman, without costing an arm and a leg.
#2: The Oilers need blue line depth
After the departure of Philip Broberg and the trade of Cody Ceci, the Edmonton Oilers need blue line depth. While the addition of Ty Emberson helps, the Oilers need depth on the back end.
In Giordano, the Oilers get a solid rearguard who can play 50 games. More importantly, his experience allows coach Kris Knoblauch to deploy a trusted element in tight situations.
It’s also worth noting that the Oilers’ prospect pipeline is somewhat thin. Therefore, expecting a younger player to be called up may be too much of a stretch. So, having Giordano on board makes sense as an insurance policy.
#1: Giordano is still searching for a Cup ring
Giordano has been in the NHL for nearly two decades. Yet, he hasn’t won a Cup ring. Thus, joining the Oilers would give him arguably the best chance to win one this upcoming season.
While he could stay in Toronto, a team with a good chance to win a Cup, the Oilers are the closest team to a Cup aside from the Florida Panthers.
Giordano could become an instrumental piece on an Oilers’ deep postseason run, getting into crucial playoff games, especially as injuries are likely to pile up during the postseason.
