Caitlin Clark has taken some heat over recent comparisons to a WNBA icon.
Clark has moved on to the pros, but her old college coach recently made some remarks about her that had social media up in arms.
Iowa women’s head coach Lisa Bluder compared Clark to former UConn and WNBA Superstar Maya Moore, branding the Indiana Fever rookie “the Maya Moore of this generation.”
“For her, Maya Moore was a huge role model growing up. So now she’s the Maya Moore of this generation. And she understands that,” Bluder said in an interview with CBS Sports.
Moore was known for her activism and left the WNBA in her prime to focus on a prison abolition program. She is now married to a man she helped set free.
Bluder was referring to the way Caitlin interacts with her younger fans, but social media wasn’t having any of it.
What Caitlin Clark And Maya Moore Had To Say About Each Other
Maya Moore happens to be one of Caitlin Clark’s idols. The 2024 No. 1 overall pick recently discussed an encounter she had with Moore when she was growing up.
“Ten seconds can go a long way in somebody’s life,” she said about meeting the former star at a Minnesota Lynx game 10 years ago. “That’s a good lesson whether you play sports or don’t play sports, how you treat somebody matters.”
“I just try to take as much time as I can for those young girls because Maya was so nice to me when I ran up to her, and that’s something that’s stuck with me all the way until I’m 22 years old.”
Moore also had a bit to say about Clark.
“How can she change the WNBA? There are so many ways to answer that question,” she told USA TODAY. “She is someone, I think, who’s a lot more than stats. She tries to bring that passion and joy to her community. I look forward to seeing how she uses her influence, how she’ll make her community better, her teammates better.”
