Since joining the Dodgers from the Toronto Blue Jays at the trade deadline, Kiermaier has played in 22 games, managing a .196 batting average with some key hits including a home run and a triple. His defensive skills and speed on the bases still make him an important player, and he could play a pivotal role if the Dodgers make it to the World Series, as he did with the Tampa Bay Rays in 2020.
Rich Hill, another seasoned player at 44, signed with the Boston Red Sox for his 20th season in the majors. Despite competing at an age when most have retired, Hill has indicated this might be his final year, with Leitch commenting on the scarcity of players who continue into their mid-40s. Hill has made a few bullpen appearances this season with a 4.91 ERA over 3.2 innings.
Jason Heyward, memorable for hitting a home run during his very first MLB game with celebrities in attendance, was a vital part of the Chicago Cubs’ historic 2016 World Series win, which ended their 108-year drought. Released by the Dodgers in August, he quickly signed with the Houston Astros, potentially adding value to their postseason aspirations.
Justin Turner, formerly an overlooked prospect with the Mets, reinvented himself as a crucial leader and clutch performer during his decade-long tenure with the Dodgers. He has achieved an above-average OPS+ in 13 consecutive seasons, beginning his career with the Baltimore Orioles.
Lastly, Jesse Chavez, who debuted with the Pirates in 2008, had stints as a starter with the A’s and Angels about a decade ago and briefly played for the Dodgers in 2016. Despite announcing in February that this would likely be his last MLB season, his performance with the Braves this season, achieving a 3.34 ERA across 42 games, might sway his decision.
