MANILA – Emotions ran high at Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3 in Pasay City on Sunday as nine overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) arrived safely after enduring harrowing experiences of human trafficking and forced labor in Myanmar. The returnees were warmly welcomed by Maria Regina Angela Galias, Assistant Secretary of the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW), along with representatives from the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) and the NAIA Task Force Against Human Trafficking (NAIATFAT).

“They have finally returned home safely, and we are committed to providing them all the support they need,” Galias said during a brief press interaction. “Their ordeal underscores the importance of vigilance, public awareness, and government coordination in the fight against human trafficking.”

The nine OFWs had been lured through seemingly legitimate job advertisements on social media promising high-paying positions as chat support agents. However, upon arrival in Myanmar, they were coerced to work in cyber-scam centers under oppressive conditions, with long hours, limited food, and no freedom to leave.

One of the rescued workers, who wished to remain anonymous for security reasons, recounted the trauma: “We were told we were starting a new life with decent jobs. Instead, we found ourselves trapped, working nonstop, and constantly monitored. We couldn’t contact our families freely. Every day felt like a nightmare.”

According to the DMW, the initial financial assistance and welfare support were immediately extended to the nine OFWs upon their return. This included temporary accommodation, medical attention, food assistance, and counseling to help them recover from the psychological and emotional effects of their ordeal.

“They will be reporting to the DMW in January 2026 for further legal aid and case management,” Galias said. “Our goal is to ensure they are fully supported and that perpetrators of these crimes are held accountable.”

Authorities noted that the victims were often selected through deceptive recruitment tactics on popular social media platforms. The promise of high salaries and supposedly legitimate companies created a false sense of security, making it easier for traffickers to manipulate and control the workers once they arrived in foreign territory.

“These recruitment schemes are sophisticated and exploit the hopes of hardworking Filipinos seeking better opportunities abroad,” said a DMW official. “It is crucial for the public to verify job offers through official government channels before accepting overseas employment.”

The Philippine government has actively coordinated with Thailand and Myanmar to track down and dismantle human trafficking and cyber-scam syndicates responsible for exploiting Filipino workers. Since 2022, the DMW has documented nearly 2,000 Filipino victims rescued from scam hubs in Myanmar, Cambodia, and Laos.

The rescue operation was complex, requiring cooperation between multiple government agencies and international authorities. “It took months of careful planning, coordination, and intelligence gathering to ensure the safe extraction of these individuals without jeopardizing their safety,” said a source familiar with the operation.

Observers noted the growing trend of cyber-scam centers operating under coercion in Southeast Asia, often targeting vulnerable populations seeking employment abroad. “These operations are not just criminal—they are organized, well-funded, and exploit systemic gaps in migration oversight,” a legal analyst explained.

Back in Manila, the rescued OFWs expressed a mixture of relief, exhaustion, and hope. Many shared their desire to return to normal life, reconnect with families, and advocate for stricter monitoring of overseas recruitment agencies.

“I just want to see my family and live in peace,” said another returnee. “I hope no one else goes through what we experienced.”

OWWA representatives also confirmed that each worker would receive additional support, including educational assistance for dependents, livelihood programs, and psychological counseling. The agencies emphasized the importance of reintegration to prevent retraumatization and help the victims regain independence and stability.

Meanwhile, the DMW called on the public to remain vigilant against similar fraudulent recruitment schemes. Galias emphasized, “Every Filipina and Filipino has the right to safe employment abroad. We urge job seekers to consult official government resources and to report any suspicious offers immediately. Awareness is our strongest defense.”

The recent rescues highlight not only the vulnerability of overseas workers but also the Philippines’ ongoing commitment to protecting its citizens abroad. It also underscores the critical role of international cooperation in combating human trafficking, a crime that spans borders and exploits systemic weaknesses.

As investigations continue, authorities have urged the victims and the public to provide any information that may aid in apprehending traffickers and dismantling exploitative networks. “We are committed to pursuing justice for our fellow Filipinos,” Galias said. “Their return is just the first step. Accountability and prevention are our long-term goals.”

The emotional homecoming of the nine OFWs serves as both a warning and a testament to the resilience of Filipino workers. Their ordeal, though tragic, brings attention to the importance of transparency, government vigilance, and cross-border collaboration in protecting vulnerable citizens.
