While rookie Ben Rice could be the long-term solution at first, his underwhelming .613 OPS in 152 MLB at-bats suggests he may not be ready to assume the role full-time next year. That being said, one intriguing solution for the Bombers at first base could be signing Paul Goldschmidt, who is expected to part ways with the St. Louis Cardinals.

Paul Goldschmidt, a seven-time All-Star and 2022 National League MVP is a proven veteran, though his 2024 season was his least productive with the Cardinals, hitting just .245 with a .713 OPS. While Goldschmidt is no longer in his prime, the New York Yankees might consider him a low-risk, high-reward option on a one-year deal. At age 37, he could provide stability at first base, allowing Rice more time to develop. His experience and leadership could be valuable, especially for a team with championship aspirations. Comparing Rizzo and Goldschmidt at this point in their careers is challenging. While he recovered on a 15-day IL stint, prospect Ben Rice was recalled from minor league. As per manager Aaron Boone, Rice will likely get some playing time at first base during the playoffs.

However, infielder Jon Berti and utility player Oswaldo Cabrera are also in the mix for some reps. Naturally, the New York Yankees are wary of Ben Rice’s inexperience, and hence, regular players like Cabrera could come in handy.
