Sometimes people think numbers are good luck, Sidney Crosby wears #87 and was born on 8/7/87 and many Penguins fans were expecting him to be signed to an extension by now.

However, Kyle Dubas has flubbed on that as Crosby is in the final season of his 12-year deal in Pittsburgh.

This is odd, as Crosby should’ve been signed by 8/7 but silence between the front office and Crosby’s camp is troubling.

Jason Mackley of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette expounded upon his worries as Dubas is flipping late-round picks with other teams:

The Crosby situation is far more worrisome. Penguins president of hockey operations Kyle Dubas was busy this past week flipping non-descriptive draft picks with the (St. Louis) Blues. Have to think there was available time to extend one of the most important athletes in our city’s history.

He thinks its unfathomable that neither party when they meet would scoff at the idea of getting a deal done from either perspective. As the Penguins want to keep Crosby, but does Crosby want to stay? Training camp is about a month out.

The longer this goes, the more it worries me that one side doesn’t want to dance. It’s just hard to decipher which one that would be.

For now, we can assume that Crosby and Dubas are enjoying their time off, before the beginning of camp prior to hammering out a new deal.

But that doesn’t mean other teams shouldn’t inquire, like the Blackhawks and Kyle Davidson. The 37-year-old is still elite, scoring 42 goals, posting 97 points and playing 20 TOI a night in 2023-2024.

He could offer a window for the Blackhawks to make a move for Crosby, as the team has a slew of picks, and prospects, and see what sticks as far as Dubas and the team would want for the superstar center, and Connor Bedard’s idol.
