Kohler High School, Wisconsin, has named its new gymnasium after legendary American basketball player and coach Joe Wolf. Born on 17 December 1964 in Kohler, Wisconsin, Wolf is considered the most successful basketball player in Wisconsin history.
Wolf’s family members, including his brother Jeff Wolf, attended the inauguration ceremony. Some attendees paid tribute to him by putting on replicas of Wolf’s jersey and caps.
Last year in September, Joe Wolf unexpectedly died at the age of 59. In a press statement, the Milwaukee Bucks paid homage to him.
“Throughout his life, Joe touched many lives and was a highly respected, adored and dedicated coach and player across the NBA.His well-regarded talent was instrumental for the Bucks and Herd over eight years with the organization, including as a player and coach.”
Joe Wolf: The acclaimed sportsman from Wisconsin
Joe Wolf’s basketball story began in fifth grade. He went from being Wisconsin’s best high school player to a well-known NBA athlete and later a respected coach.
In 1983, Joe Wolf was praised as the “high school all-American.” His acclaimed performances led Kohler to win three state championships. Wisconsin is part of the Big East-South Conference in NCAA Division I.
Wolf played college basketball as a forward at the University of North Carolina under coach Dean Smith. In his senior year, he was the co-captain of the Tar Heels, sharing the captaincy with Kenny Smith. He earned the Jimmie Dempsey Award as UNC’s overall statistical leader. Joe Wolf also played alongside the legendary Michael Jordan and Sam Perkins.
Moreover, Wolf was rewarded with the Carmichael-Cobb Award as UNC’s outstanding defensive player and in 1987, he was named the first-team ALL-ACC.
In his NBA career, spanning over 11 years, Wolf played 592 games for seven teams, totaling 2,485 points. He was the 13th overall pick of the 1987 NBA draft. He played for the Los Angeles Clippers, Portland Trail Blazers, and Milwaukee Bucks, among others.
According to a press clipping from Sheboygan Country Historical Research Center, Sports writer Danny Moyer wrote about Wolf’s pick in the NBA.
“Joe Wolf, who just about everybody in the county has played against at the Y on one occasion or another, is now in the NBA. Think on that for a minute. The 13th pick in the entire nation has come from Kohler, Wis.”
An elbow injury in 1999 marked the end of Wolf’s NBA career but his love for basketball was immense. After his NBA career, he became an assistant coach at William & Mary and UNC Wilmington. Wolf was a head coach at the G League in Idaho, Colorado, and Greensboro and his stint at Milwaukee and Brooklyn as an NBA assistant has been praised. In 2023, Wolf was hired as a G League assistant for the Wisconsin Herd.
