Ipswich cheekily taunt Tottenham and James Maddison; while Ange Postecoglou stares down booing Spurs fans following defeat.

The Tractor Boys were ahead on 30 minutes, brilliant improvisation from Sam Szmodics as he connected with a loose ball and produced a fine overhead kick that finds the bottom corner.

Then just before half time, a quick counter and Liam Delap pounced on a low cross that was initially blocked to smash in from close range.

Bentancur got one back for Tottenham, heading home from a corner in the second half, but it only proved to be a consolation goal and come full time, the boos rang out around the stadium as players left the pitch, with Ange Postecoglou appearing to direct an intense glare at a Tottenham supporter following the team’s disappointing performance.

Ipswich’s Harry Clarke also had a cheeky message for the Tottenham fans, the Arsenal academy product was caught flicking two middle fingers up at the home supporters.

Ipswich also tweeted a photo, mocking ex-Norwich player James Maddison, writing: “It’s much easier to get a Hutchinson shirt by going to our online store.”

Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna told BBC Sport: “So proud. It’s been a long time for the club, 22 years since the supporters saw a win in the Premier League. The journey to get to here has been a big one. It feels a bit special today. We believe we’ve been improving. We’ve picked up five out of 10 results but were waiting for the first win to validate the work and improvements. It’s a massive moment, one to cherish.

“The first half it was everything [you’d want] for a team in our context against Tottenham. A good balance. Moments where we played a a good tempo and moments where we slowed it down.

“A top half away from home. In the second half we showed good resilience. We didn’t give away too many chances. We defended well and were a threat on the break. A top performance.

“It was really important [to hang on]. If we’d conceded at the end it would have been a big blow. To get one over the line like that we’ve deserved for quite a few weeks. A big boost for everyone.

“The players are delighted. They know it’s a win to cherish.”

On Ed Sheeran: “He popped into the dressing room which is nice. We’re wearing the third kit he had a part in designing.”

Ipswich striker Liam Delap to Sky Sports: “It means so much. We’ve put in so many great performances and just lacked that final bit. The performance was terrific. This is a horrible place to come. We couldn’t be happier.

“The manager is so good. He helps us every week. We’ve shown today we can stick to that [plan].”

Team-mate Sam Szmodics: “We knew we had to start fast. It’s a tough place to come. We deserved the goals in the first half. It’s such a tough league.”

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou on about what work he could do over the international break: “They all go away so there’s nothing I can address in the next 13 days until I get them back.”

Postecoglou to BBC Sport: “Hugely disappointing. We started slow and passively. We gave ourselves a mountain to climb. Second half we had chances but didn’t do enough to win the game.

“It’s just down to me. I’m not getting consistent performances from the players. It’s something I need to address. I’m the person in charge so that’s usually the way it goes. I take responsibility.

“We can’t give ourselves those kind of mountains to climb.”

On Ipswich players going down injured regularly: “It seems to be the way the Premier League is going. Clubs are taking strategic time-outs. We just have to cop it. It’s up to the officials not me.”

Tottenham captain Son Heung-min: “It’s very disappointing. Before they scored we had a couple of chances. We conceded a very sloppy goal that shouldn’t happen. It’s more than disappointing.

“Sometims you have to be calm and find a better solution if someone is in a better position. We have to be better in those kind of situations. It’s very painful.”

Here’s how fans reacted as Ipswich cheekily taunt Tottenham and James Maddison; Ange stares down booing Spurs fans…

@_kieranbl: The scenes at that Full Time Whistle yesterday were insane. Felt like a 97th-minute winner. Pure relief, pure emotion. On-par and maybe even better than Coventry [a] last season. Beautiful #itfc

@tottenham_mail: Never heard away fans so loud at full time in our stadium. Well deserved but fuming with my club. Enjoy the win 👏

@crablitt81: I remember 4 years ago losing at home to Fleetwood in L1 with a drop to L2 more likely than us ever to getting back to the Prem. To go from that to beating Spurs away is just remarkable. A great day for us that have stuck with this superb club through thick and thin 🔵⚪️ #itfc

@followthetowen: Today’s win is an incredibly surreal representation of how far we’ve come in the last couple of years. So fucking proud of those boys #itfc

@Horty86: Just home. What a day. 🙌🏼 Everyone to a man. Absolutely superb. Big shout out to Aro Muric. Come in for criticism of late but today he was an absolute wall. Liam Delap ole ole. This club. 💙

@MarkTuxford_: Sat in the home end today listening to Spurs fans continuously say ‘can’t believe we’re losing to Ipswich, they’ve not won all season’. Hard to bite my tongue in nervy moments & release every emotion once that full time whistle went, BUT WHAT A FUCKING WIN!! UPPA TOWN #itfc

@MichaelSC03: Honestly… well played. We didn’t deserve anything. gg. Enjoy it

@NJPaterson70: Massive, and so deserved. It’s been coming all season. Push on now #itfc

@MorganSmith1000: Finally home and able to reflect… Burgess and O’Shea would head nukes back to Russia. Cajuste is just Iniesta reborn. Tuanzebe has one thumb and could stick put Son in his pocket. Muric is a big beer chugging DEMON. Up the fucking Switch 🚜 #itfc

@kkkaylaface: This win means so much more to these players than I think we realise, never known a team to be so concerned about how the fans feel and thrive off the enjoyment of it all 🥰💙 #itfc
