Evanna Lynch Speaks Out on J.K. Rowling’s Trans Controversy
In a recent interview with The Telegraph, Evanna Lynch, renowned for her role as Luna Lovegood in the Harry Potter films, addressed the ongoing backlash that J.K. Rowling has faced since making comments on Twitter that many have deemed transphobic. Lynch expressed her shock at the intensity of the criticism directed at Rowling, highlighting that her character has always stood up for the most vulnerable members of society. However, she noted that the issue lies in differing views on who constitutes the most vulnerable.
“I wish people would show her more grace and take the time to listen to her,” Lynch said. She referred to Rowling’s initial comments from 2020, where the author questioned the use of the phrase “people who menstruate.” Rowling subsequently elaborated on her stance in a Twitter thread, arguing that if sex is not real, then concepts like same-sex attraction and the lived experiences of women globally are erased.
During that time, other Harry Potter stars, including Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint, publicly defended the trans community. Lynch also tweeted her concerns, stating, “I think it’s irresponsible to discuss such a delicate topic over Twitter through fragmented thoughts, and I wish Jo wouldn’t do that.” Despite her admiration for Rowling, she felt compelled to express her discomfort with the manner in which the topic was being handled.
After facing backlash for her support of Rowling, Lynch decided to delete her Twitter account. Reflecting on this in her latest interview, she admitted, “I didn’t even know there were two sides. I had a simplistic view of good and bad.” She expressed empathy for both perspectives, acknowledging her own struggles as a teenager who loathed her body. “I have great compassion for trans people and I don’t want to add to their pain,” she stated.
Several other Harry Potter stars, including Helena Bonham Carter and Ralph Fiennes, have come forward to support Rowling, while Succession star Brian Cox labeled her critics as “high and mighty.”
